How CAn We Help Country Cup

I will go with #7 but with an amendment that the seedings go teams 1,3,5,7,9 & 11 Div A and teams 2,4,6,8,10 & 12 from the previous years overall results.
Rob
Would you have it as Mens and womens split but points from both teams go to the overall, so say it was us(and we split it top 6 and bottom 6), our chicks would be Div 1 and the guys in Div 2, we would play diffent teams ect. but points going to overall?
Would your suggestion be on overall standings and how would it be worked if say Albury Ass. was in the Div 2 would their men bowl in Div 2 agains Sale Ovens ect twice?
What i am gettin at is if the Assosiation (just using Albury as an example because it works) was in the lower six but one of the individual teams is at the top (Albury men 1st last year 3rd this year) would their mens team then bowl against the Div 2 sides twice? Would the idea of having Divs for both mens and Ladies sides fix this yet have all points still contribute to an overall Champion Association?
Very Interesting.

I guess what Rob's format would work on is by choosing 1,3,5,7,9 & 11in Div 1 and 2,4,6,8,10 & 12 in div 2 that teams 11 and 12 would be close to each other in competitive ability and therefore unless a team recruits a real star, the teams would even themselves out.

This format definitely calls for a 12th team, the bye in there would really make things seem uneven, even if on paper they weren't.

To avoid the stigma of Div 1 and 2, just use a left and right handed draw. Or call them group A and group B.

Just my thoughts.

Watch out for tanking ;). Libba will dob!

David:
The trouble is who gets the position as 12th team.. and who gets to decide who that team will be.
I understand the Sale people will want to stay in the competition..but will they have a bowl this time next year or not.. if not you create another bye after having gone through the exercise of adding another team to even up the competition.

Ace_Hi

I can live with Rob's suggestion, therefore I am happy to be put against #7 as well.

Ace - there are plenty of teams waiting to get in.

I am a 2 - i think that by implementing this small change we can make a huge impact for the better to the tournament whilst not losing anything that we already have. Still maintain 2 rounds and still maintain all teams

For example if the ladies bowled 8 games straight up the men could watch at least half of them if not more and still have plenty of time to prepare themselves- If all of the teams do this then there is approx 4 hours each day to catch up with friends and etc whilst re-creating the atmosphere that once was. Whichever team (men or ladies) is bowling first maybe the host association could organise a tea for all of the teams and the team bowling second have a lunch and this could happen on both the saturday and sunday

Bowling games on a Friday night is a good suggestion but if it is only to get away earlier on a monday who are we really benefiting (Iagree with Deano you dont wont to be in a car for hours then bowl straight away) - Alot of people now choose to stay the Monday night - not everyone does but a majority do espically if they are driving. So by finishing earlier what is the advantage except if you are driving back home that night

The advantage i saw was that most people already have the Friday off but currently also have to take Tuesday off because of late finish. This way they can reduce the number of days off work. Also by bowling Friday night it makes Saturday and Sunday shorter days as well.

I can also see the merits of option number two.. so i will also vote with that one

I think option 2 is the best, least amount of changes, I know a lot of people think that eight games is too much for a pair of lanes but not too many years ago ( 3-4 years ) Ruchuig and Walter De Veer (5 person teams) bowled all day without lane mantinance. It came down to which bowlers made the best line up and equiptment changes to suit the conditions. Basiclly it came down to who was thinking the best at the time as to who was scoring. The high scores were still able to be shot.
I know I carry at least 3 differant balls with differant drillings to try to cope with differant conditions.

Put me down for Option 2
As Farky said, small change big improvement

PS That makes 12 votes in total, I wonder how representative that is of country cup bowlers through-out the state or are we just the noisy minority

A lot of country cup bowlers are members of this site, but a lot of them never post or rarely post. Would be good if they could post what they reckon on this topic as it could affect them too.
This only started yesterday and some people don't come online every day, so if we give it a few weeks (it's not like this has to be done in a major hurry) we might get more opinions.

I agree something needs to change Deano, but i think that some of the options bought up are definite nos, lets see what the consensus is first.

Also, practically every year there is some change to Country cup so it's not like this is setting a precedent.

This year we changed the starting time -- 7am -- first time ever. We also bowled against the bye --- last year we didn't
Last year we had a compromised draw rather than a standard draw (due to location of the bye and 12 lane centre)
2006 we had 4 game oilings for the first time
2003 we bowled at easter (extremely unpopular choice but it still happened)
2004 we dropped from 12 teams back to 11 and bowled the bye for automatic points (i could go on but i think i have made my point)

As i have said a couple of times, we are only trying to suggest changes to improve the event, not totally change the essence of it.

Ok what a lot of reading that was.....

Format..
Robs suggestion of the Squad A & Squad B has merit (odds and even finishes from previous year paired). It would need to be seeded separately for men and women though imho for it to be fair.. not seeded on previous team overall.

In regards to oiling..
just a side note.. why exactly did Ballarat have to refill the oiling machine after 1-8 then do 9-16.. I'm not a tech or that knowledgeable on the subject but I would have thought an oiling machine could do 16 lanes in one go?

To bowl 8x5 games in one oil imho for some bowlers to be competitive across the 8 games it would require bowlers to get more equipment (in some cases it wouldn't be suitable for their week to week leagues), how do bowlers effectively practice for the dry as **** conditions if their centre is one that isn't afraid to put some oil on their lanes.. obviously some bowlers have bowled many other tournaments whether teams or individual and have experience with sort of thing, but not all bowlers in country cup bowl other tournaments.. they are the week to week league bowlers.. (such as myself)
As stated before in the thread the lanes at Ballarat held up reasonable for 3 games then started to really change from there, bowl another 4 games on those lanes and well it would have been interesting...

Time Frame..
I took the friday off, and the tuesday, was planning on driving back monday night but the weekend takes it toll... no way was i risking driving back monday night. I was drained and 5 hour drive home wasn't goin to happen.
Bowling on the Friday to me depending on how far away it is would result in the Thursday off as well and an extra night accom. I drove to Ballarat on the Friday, and even then fronting up and having the 3 games practice was not good.

Thats my 2 cents on what ive just read..
But I don't know much :surrender:

Does anyone think has legs?

Sat.
Men bowl 6 straight.
Start 7 AM, bowl through to 1 PM.
Lanes Conditioned.
Women bowl 6 straight.
Start 2 PM, bowl through to 8 PM.
Lanes Conditioned
Men bowl 5 straight.
Start 9 PM, finish 2 AM.

Sunday
Women bowl 6 straight.
Start 7 AM, bowl through to 1 PM.
Lanes Conditioned.
Men bowl 6 straight.
Start 2 PM, bowl through to 8 PM.
Lanes Conditioned
Women bowl 5 straight.
Start 9 PM, finish 2 AM.

Monday
Men bowl 5 straight
Lanes conditioned
Women bowl 5 straight.

22 rounds, no extended lineage, and as far as I can add up, about the same time as 8 and 8 per day (roughly).

????????????????????????

Apparently CCup allows 55 minutes per game, over 17 games in a day, finish time should be before 1 AM. Just thought it was worth mentioning.

Thats not too bad really, would mean bowlers had to make some adjustments to sleeping, maybe an arvo sleep for the teams bowling the 2 blocks in 1 day, but it has legs imho

Sorry Dave.

I don't like your format. Too large a day, with too big a break in the middle. What would you do with that time. Waiting to go back on. Just like we have now.

Just my opinion.

A slight change to the number 2 option, for those that think we have to have an oil after 4.

Oil after 4, but still play the 8 straight. The day is then finished, for the squad to have a break and get ready for the next days bowling.
