Emerson Shield - 2007

No Jamie - rules have been changed for this year
First and second from each zone final go through to final (3 zones x 2 teams = 6)
The rest of the teams can participate in a repechage (optional) and top 4 from the repechage go through to make up a total of 10.
This is meant to make the final more competitive and give more teams from each zone a chance to compete. Because some zones are stronger than others it meant the final was not as strong in depth. This way you can have anywhere up to 6 teams from one zone if that zone is strong enough.
These rule changes were announced to team managers and captains before the start of the final last year in Werribee.

OK cool, thanks for that Gary. Makes your zone that much harder to qualify for the final now doesnt it? ;)

Yeah - "you aint kiddin"

But it also makes it hard for the strong teams in our zone - noone is guaranteed 1-2. Could be even harder if North Geelong fields a strong team -- not really sure what is happening there. I guess in theory you could have David and Andrew Carmichael plus Chandler.... that would make the zone even harder.

Not just harder in our zone though - take a look at the North. Last year the bye finished third behind Sunraysia and Bendigo (Shep were def champs and did not bowl zone). This year one of Sunraysia, Shepparton and Bendigo will have to go through repechage too.

With our resident bookie back from an extended "holiday" in Qld, it must be about time for this years odds. Who will make it through the zones 1-2 and qualify for the final?

I also have a suggestion

I reckon we dump the repechage and have
top 3 (out of 6 teams) from the North
top 3 (out of 6 teams) from the East and
top 4 (out of 7 teams) from the West (extra team this year - Nth Geelong)

Still have ten in final, reduce cost by not having repechage, strongest zone gets 4 teams into final. (Past two women's winners from Western zone, and three of the last 4 mens winners from Western zone)

I know this can't happen at this late stage, but i am starting the suggestion for next year. I guess it will depend on how popular the repechage turns out to be - if we have 10 -12 teams then it will stay but if we only get 5 or 6 teams then alternatives might need to be looked at. A lot of people have told me that if they don't qualify straight out then they won't be going to repechage (it might be different when push comes to shove they may change their minds)

PS - Thread has been way too quiet so i figured it was time we start to fire things up a bit.
