Thanks to all the teams that participated, goodluck to the teams straight into the Emerson Shield final at Geelong. And to all the other teams dont froget to nominate for the repercharge at Altona in September. Ring Ray Hodge at Melton bowl for further details.
Cheers :)

Thank you to all who made my 1st tournment a pleasure.
While I didn't bowl particularly well (excluding the positional round :bb: )
it was nice to meet those that I have chatted too via here!
Maybe see you all again soon!

Congratulations to all teams that made the finals especially the Narre Warren Men. For those going to the repechage, best of luck and good bowling.

Must say i am not a big fan of the positional round in any event and the Eastern zone final yesterday only reconfirms my belief.

In both Men's and Women's division the teams that finished second after playing every other team once did not finish top 2. why? because the rules of the positional round means that the team that is good enough to finish top 2 then has the "advantage" of playing top team again, while the team that finished third has the "disadvantage" of playing the fourth ranked team.

In the case of the womens division the top team had won 46 points compared to fourth placed 26.5 - who would you rather play? It is a huge advantage for the third placed team compared to second especially if second and third are close.

If positional is going to be used it should be first versus last, second versus seond last etc. Fair enough if positional is used to decide an ultimate winner then you would want first playing second to decide the victor but in an event where top 2 are going through it is pointless.

This is not a dig at the teams that made it through to the final they won through fair and square according to the rules. This is just a grizzle about the positional round.

I'd be interested in what other people think.

Gary - I couldn't agree more.
Why did we need the positional round? I can't see any logical reason why it was needed. From my memory this is a first and I hope last time it will occur in Emerson.
Will all the zones have the same format, or was it just at the discretion of the zone tournament director?

The only logical reason i can think of (and i may stand corrected) would be the extra game. All zones last year were 2 full rounds (mostly 10 games). This year the extra team in two zones would mean two rounds is not practical - therefore back to 1 round = 7 games. Maybe someone has thought that the positional round will add one more game.

I am not sure whether other zones will have positional round - someone else will have to answer that one.

Firstly I would like to congratulated EFL and Epping ladies and Narre and Mentone men for making it through to the finals.

To the Sale men - you did yourselves proud on the weekend. A great effort and you certainly made a lot of bowlers sit up and pay attention.

A special mention to Scott Morris who has just left the junior ranks and finished the day with a 203 average. It must be that water Joe has that makes you bowl that good ;)

Also to Jason King who was a great role model of what team bowling is all about. It maybe your first big tourny Jason but you showed a lot of bowlers how it should be done. :smilie_gruenweiss:

To the Sale ladies - thank you for an enjoyable tourny with a lot of laughs. You ladies just keep improving also. I am proud to have been a part of this team.

Again a special mention to Rhonda Osborne. A very brave lady. Her father is very very ill but she still honoured her commitment to the team. On top of that she was suffering with the flu. What a champion you are to come out and bowl 20 pins over your average with everything going on in my life. You are my hero Rhonda!!

I also wanted to thank all the bowlers who took time out to ask how I was going. I was struggling on Saturday as this was my first tourny since coming back to bowling and it did hurt. But as long as there are people like yourselves around me, I know that I will be OK. THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEARTH.

I am getting teary eyed again just thinking about the fact that I have bowled my last tourny at EFL. I am struggling to come to grips with it. To Joe and ALL the great staff I thank you for a great weekend and a great contribution to my life. I will cherish every moment I have had at EFL. I wish all of you the best for the future.

Liz Fabian-Czmok

PS Steve I will now wear your shirt with pride ;)

If you have any complaints with regards positional round or anything else with Emerson Shield, you should direct your questions to Ray Hodge the Goldpin Tournament director. I am sure that he will be happy to put forward any worthwhile suggestions to the next Goldpin Meeting.
If I remember last year some of you complained about bowling 2 rounds, because it became a very long day or weekend.

Firstly, thanks to Joe and the staff at EFL for the way the tournament was ran. If I could afford to hire you all for the next Sports tournament, I definately would, as you guys are the best at running them. Bar none...

Well done to the 2 teams that made it through. You guys bowled really well and deserved to get through. Getting beaten by a 103 year old man shooting 280 against my 240ish was surprisingly easy to swallow, as all the shots he made were great!

The comments regarding the positional round IMHO are spot on. We were the unlucky victim of it. Narre Warren had the strongest team on the day by 6 points going into the last round, and we had the next highest points (and only just) so we had to play them in the positional. I'm not sure of the answer to the issue, so I won't suggest anything for now, but it's definately something that should be LOOKED at for future events.

Thanks to an enjoyable first Emerson Shield experience guys!

The positional round would not be an issue next year anyway. Our zone would be able to bowl 2 rounds EASY.........

Sadly we have lost EFL and Rosebud from our zone. They will both be missed. Rosebud may not be a strong side but they are a lot of fun to bowl with.

I also forgot to thank all the people who offered us accomodation in the off chance that we could not make it back home on Saturday. Once again I like to mention how grateful I am for being part of such a great group of people.

Liz

The very reason i posted on here is that Ray has often explained why a lot of these decisions have been made - and uses this forum to do so. Quite often there are very good reasons.

Quite a few people did complain about the two rounds last year being too long and most zones have been changed as a result. Just not sure of the reasoning behind the addition of the positional round -
hence this post.

I fully understand that because all zones are different (different numbers of centres, different levels of experience within zones etc) that it is not possible to have a blanket rule that covers everything.
As a bowler it is difficult to know what is happening from year to year. I have been involved with Emerson for three years and every year has seen major changes to the format - some better some not.

I did not know about this years zone format until last week - not sure if that is bad communication from the top or bad communication from the individual centres. I would rather post on here and let Ray answer in his own time (and inform other bowlers at the same time) than annoy him with phone calls.

Thank you to EFL for a well run day. It was nice to bowl and still get home in time to tuck the 'little fella' into bed.

Congratulations to the Narre men for getting through to the finals. We may not have been the strongest on paper, but made up for it by working as a team.

Now that EFL is closing, maybe we can entice Tothie back to Narre next year? It was certainly an experience seeing what it's like from the other side - my next counselling session is booked in for tomorrow...

I think that TOTHIE should be on everyone draft list next year, he is worth several wins just by talking to the opposition. It was a pleasure to have hime bowl for EFL this year.:D :D

Shane - What can I say. Hope you recover soon. As far as coming
back to narre next year - ???? - ;)

Joe - The pleasure was/is all mine. Each & every one of you welcomed
me with open arms :inlove:
