Look Matt....
We all have different opinions on the whose and the what's of Shield, but most of us know its a chance to bowl against some of the best junior bowlers Australia currently has to offer from each state/territory.
Now, whether or not you choose to focus on either doing your best for your team, bowling against all odds to get into the All Stars team, or hell even focus on both, you still have to deal with all the politics of our sport.
For example: threads like this which show how "popularity" sometimes is over-looked by actual talent in tenpin.
Take a look at last years All Stars "betting" thread. We had names such as Hamish Rogers, Luke Green, Dion Alexander, and Matt Simpson. Most of these guys are pretty popular with all of the bowlers and are well known for their talent and ability to bowl extensively well, but alas did not (with the exception of Matt Simpson) make the All Stars team.
Now I'm not saying they bowled bad, heck the other three were all in the Top 10 bowlers on averages (and Luke missed out on All Stars by 1pin on average), its just how it is, some bowlers are better on the day and some aren't.
But thats just the individual side of things, then there's other contributing factors such as working together as a team to bowl to the best of your ablility. Take WA/SQ boys for example. Both were near unstoppable in their race to the finish. Both gave their all, as individuals and as a team aswell, co-opertaing and cheering until that last ball was bowled on the third day.
Their reward you ask? Satisfaction that they gave it the best they could, the great feeling of being winners, and those shiny medals hanging around their necks.
So tell us Matt, why are you complaining about who people choose as bowlers they want to be in the All Stars for 2007? You haven't bowled for your state nor have you dreamed about it, so you know absolutely nothing about Shield or whats involved. Hell, ask your sis Beck about it, she made All Stars and her team mates grabbed 1st place for the girls. Thats the ultimate fantasy for any shield bowler. And obviously you have no sense in what is it to win.
Being team-commited is great, but in this sport, as Luke D has said, you have to be a little bit selfish to gain that little bit more....
Peace Out,
BJ
