i would have to ask the question "what can be offered to a sponsor" and "is sponsorship neccesary" we all take part in sports as they are hobbies and hobbies cost money, professional sports people use sport as their primary income and find it easier to acquire sponsorship.
I look at it in the way if i was to sponsor something what will it do for me, what will my hard earned $$$ return for me. I wouldnt even consider sponsoring something purely because the competitors have trouble raising the funds to do what they enjoy doing, to me thats a handout.
Its a sad situation when people have trouble affording the things they love but at the end of the day we all have to live within our means. As kids most of us (the ones that werent born with silver spoons in their mouths) we would quite often heard "sorry but we cant afford it right now" and we learned to deal with it.
Also with sponsorships they really can dictate a substantial amount in terms of clothing and such, how would teams feel if sponsors demanded they wore clothing that was outrageous and really stood out, would people feel silly as advertising billboards that would attract so much attention.
If i was to sponsor a womens team it would be imperitive that extremely short skirts shall be worn, as that will attract peoples attention and gain my sponsorship more exposure
