Shield Trials - No. of Games ???

Hey Guys,

This weekened WA Juniors started their President Shield Trials..........

First Day, 6 Games cut to 14......... To allow the format to comply with TBA rulings, that a maximum of 20 games is all that is permitted for Shield Trials.

Now this just doesnt sound right to me at all. A maximum of 20 Games, makes it a a bit a sprint to the finish line, surely its a minimum of 20 games??

Anyone out there know if this 20 Games ruling is correct?

Clint Phelps

Well for the tassie shield trials for the last 3 years there have been 28 games over 2 weekends with 7 games each day...so im pretty sure that minimum of 20 games is wrong...unless it has recently been changed...who knows???? lol

Number of Games for the Shield

The rules on the TBA WebSite do not mention the number of games for a roll off only that 24 games have to be bowled in a TBA league

the TBA site is http://www.tenpin.org.au then go to rules & reg for all the rules for the nationals

Here in SA, this year we had 8 games for stage 1, cut to top 20
Stage 2 is 19 head to head match play games, that makes 27 games.

Which raises the question that so far TBA have been either unwilling or unable to answer :- When do the 24 games have to be bowled by ?
Roll-off ? Competition ? End of the year ?
I say unanswered, because Queensland have repeatedly asked for clarification of this rule.
Can you help out Iann ?

In other words you can't help Ian. Why not just say so.
To say that 24 games must be bowled in the current year is a joke. It means that a competitor can say ok I will bowl them after the competition. So he goes in the comp goes home and promptly forgets to bowl his legal requirement of 24 games.
That means he has bowled illegally for his State. And seeing as the comp is over, he or his State can hardly be penalised.
For this rule to make any sense the 24 game requirement should have been fulfilled prior to roll-off.
Alternatively remove the rule completely.

Andrew S - Full Name???

The rules state 24 games in a TBA league- if you don't bowl these games before the shield you are not qualified!!!!!!!!!

Roll off not before November in the previous year

Have you read the rules???

From my list of bowlers you do not bowl in tournaments or the shield

You only stir!!

Read the Rules

Of course you will disagree

(at least I put my full name)

The following is an extract from the Victorian President Shield 2003 entry forms:

ELIGIBILITY:

JUNIORS MUST BE UNDER THE AGE OF 18 AS AT THE 1ST JANUARY 2003.

Open to all Junior T.B.A. Registered Players residing in the State of Victoria and Albury/Wodonga, regardless of average. All nominees must have bowled in a T.B.A. Accredited League (minimum 24 games) in 2002 and remain bowling in an accredited league during the year of Shield. Must not bowl in another area’s President’s Shield Trials.

Victorian Selection Trials commence on the 18th January 2003. We also ask the bowlers to list their leagues (and number of games) on their entry form.

Sorry Ian but I think you should read the rule. It quite clearly states 24 games in the current year. It says nothing about bowling these games before the shield. I don't understand what you mean by roll off not before November in the previous year. How is that relevant to the 24 game rule ? (Rule 6d)
I don't usually bother to put my full name on posts in this forum as most regular members know the full identity of Andrew S. However as you are a newcomer I extend my apologies.
Part of my job within Qld bowling is to try to understand Shield/Rachuig and De Veer rules.
Obviously you and I have different interpretations of this rule. I had thought that John Coxon was going to clarify it with the last re-write.
If you or anybody connected the National board can supply a written clarification I will be most grateful.
I am sorry that because I don't understand a rule you think I am stirring, maybe you should try to see another point of view.

So what u are saying is that the format for Shield Roll Offs can be based on any amount of games.

Example is that if WA have only 15 boys or girls nominate, you can have 14 games matchplay to determine the 7 state bowlers.

Is this correct? Or does each state have to have a minimum amount of games for trials? Forget weather bowlers are eligible based on league games. What is the minimum or maximum amount of Shield Roll Off games played in the formats?

Thanks,
Christian

Christian there are no rules to state how many games maximum or minimum should be played to determine any State team roll-off. Whether it be Shield, Rachuig or De Veer.
It could be any number depending on your local State committee.
The National rules apply to all States and cannot be varied. Individual States can however impose their own local rules, as long as they do not conflict with the National rules.
This is how there can be totally different roll-off proceedures between the States. The actual roll-off is left to the individual States to format.

I believe that it is up to each state/region/territory to set the number of games in a roll off.

In Vic, we have 16 games of qualifying and then we cut to the top 16 boys and girls. They then have 15 games of matchplay for a total of 31 games (over 4 days).

hey there all,

if a maximum of 20 games had been put on trials then me has 2 questions about it:

1) in 2001 trials for WA we had 10games qualifying (5games each day) and then cut to the top 16 for 15 games of matchplay over another 2 days, and 2002 trials were 12games qualifying over 2 days and another 15games of matchplay. Why was this allowed to go on??? (even though this format was a lot better than what they are for this year's trials --- correct me if i'm wrong, but i think 1999 trials had 32 or 33 games in total, 14 games qualifying and 19 games of matchplay)

and 2) Why weren't the bowlers given any notice of this????

can someone please shed some light on this?

Luke.

I dont understand it either. Last year there were more than 20 games. and.. I reckon that 2 days to make the cut was better than one. But... since you only get 3 days for shield.. dont u want the people who bowl highest games early instead of over a LONG time? Either way, Im as lost as everyone else on this Subject. If 20 games is Minium... then WA is doing one under the minimum. :p If its max, then.. we are doing one under that. Oh well. May as well just bowl it, and see how we alkk go then. Cyas
