Part of the reason the lower grades are not turning up to the nationals is the tougher lane conditions of the last few years. Lower grade bowlers have told me they don't want to spend heaps of money to go to Sydney and shoot 30 pins per game below average. This has been even more evident at the Junior Nationals.
We have to remember that the Nationals are a GRADED event! I have no problem with putting down tougher patterns for the Adult Masters, but the graded bowlers, both adult and (especially) juniors do not have the physical tools or the knowledge to handle these types of patterns. The Nationals used to have a core of graded bowlers that travelled every year, in addition to the local graded players. They have been lost to the Nationals because they do not enjoy their bowling on these patterns
