Australian Team Selection Men and Women

Congratulations to all who made the Mens FIQ team. I cannot comment on who does and doesnt deserve to be there as I dont pay much attention to adult mens results. But obviously all 6 bowlers deserve to be there otherwise they wouldnt have been even considered for the spot on the team.

As far as I am concerned the only way we are going to stop people from whinging and whinning in this sport, is to have it that every team is chosen on either top 4,6, or 7 or whatever number of bowlers the team consists of. Because this way if you dont make it it is your god damn fault and not joe or mary bloggs or whoever the selectors may be.

As for outdated equipment. Who says you need new gear to be able to perform! I for one believe that this statement is a total crock! Back in 1997 I won a speed zone and I am still using the ball to this very day and just for the records I bowl better with this ball than I do with my newer ball. I totally agree with Pedro, just because someone is using older equipment doesnt mean they arent worthy of selection. Maybe it just goes to show thatb they are using more skill than meets the eye because this equipment isnt advanced as the equipment that is being released today. I also know of many other bowlers out there that are using equipment that is older than 12 months and they are producing the results too. I honestly do think some people with sponsorhship forget just how fortunate they are to have their sponorship and that some people dont realise how lucky they are to be in the financial situation that they seem to be in. Not all bowlers have that comfort.

Sorry if none of this made sence but I had to say it.

Once again congrats to all who made the team and I am 100% sure you will AUS proud no matter what the outcome.

You may say being an FIQ Captain is only a tag,but nice to see you defending the Team already Andrew.
You really dont have to though..because you couldnt get a more balanced selection process then 3 past the post..3 selected.
Two bites of the cherry.
Its about playing the format isnt it..take Georges case,at the end of the day..the super 6 t,ments were the crucial ones..not the intrastate/overseas ones.Run in the top 3 and you are in..guaranteed..
As for selection..well thats totally out of every bowlers control..but then those that are selected are beyond approach.
Targeting them is like shooting the messenger.
Perhaps if the selectors would have been a bit more transparent and outlined the criterea for their decision process..those that went close/or aspiring , would have a better idea what was/is required.
Ever see a selector do that.?

Firstly Congratulations to all who made the Aussie team! Fantastic effort and good luck in Hong Kong!

My opinion on the New equipment vs Old would be while it's certainly nice to have the new stuff it's still the person behind the ball..Matty Francis won the NSW Open and the Brunswick cup last year using mostly a Defense Zone and a Cuda C and is probably another bloke out of a group who could consider himself unlucky not to be heading to Hong Kong. To those who earlier bagged some of the guys in the team as Tom said it's like shooting the messenger. They didn't pick themselves all they did was put their name down like everybody else so give em a break.

Congratulations to all those who made the F.I.Q. team last weekend. To all those guys who probably deserved to be there also it is unfortunate that we cant send 2 teams as we have enough talent here at the moment to do so.
Looking at the team I noticed Anthony Flynn is back. I was in Sydney when the 99 team was
announced and Flynny was ommitted. Unlike most of the backseat whingers on here Anthony
has improved his game to the point where on the weekend he gave the selectors no other choice but to put him back into the team.
Instead of knocking those who had the difficult job of selecting the remaining 3 bowlers perhaps you should all take a leaf from Anthony Flynns and Paul Trotters book.
Bowl the tournaments, put the results on the
board and let that do all the talking. Then
you too will reap the rewards as they have.
One final comment on equipment. The fact that
Paul has managed to beat so many of you guys
using "older" equipment only highlights further that maybe his mental approach to the
game is more focussed on what is required to
get the results instead of which of these new
balls will get the job done for me. Taking
the easy road isnt always the quickest way
to the top.

This looks likes an alright team to me. They all put up some good numbers on a condition that was not always easy to hit. No doubt about Frawls' form either, ever since his return to the Storm Staff he's been petty hard to stop. Well done to Trots too, he could bowl with a round block of ice with 3 holes in it and still score.

WOW!!!!
Just taken my first look at the forum since coming back from Aust Open.
No matter who was selected there was going to be big discussions on who should & should not have made the team.
As we live in a democratic society & this is an "open forum" everyone is entitled to their opinion as long as the line is drawn at personal attacks.

To the team.........
A big congragulations to you all!!!!!!!!
Frawls, Mike, Anthony & Belmo....you know what it is all about.
Biily & Trot's....wear your shirt with pride & I hope you enjoy every single bit of it.

To you all..........
Do Australia proud!!!!!!
Medals mean money & more recognition for this great sport of our's.

Simply put..Do your best & bring back as many medals as possible.

Cheers

just in regards to greg holmes accurate comments on paul trotter and work ethic.

over the years paul has been dealt some nasty blows from selectors, at shield and rachuig level, and for sure paul has worked harder on his game than most could imagine and thats why he has got to where he is right now, by purely turning negatives into positives.

congrats paul, and well done flynny, always great to see a geelong guy popping up in any representative side.

After consideration i thought i would weigh into the debate.
Firstly to Craig Chandler, I dont know about the Billy working hard part as i have probably known Billy for as long as you have and he has never had to work hard because he has always been great. The only reason for it taking so long for him to make a team is some not fantastic choices he has made over the years.
And to George, I know you are dissapointed mate but dont make reference to people's equipment because its what you feel comfortable with (what about at Strathpine when i kicked you with a fire Quantum, how old r they).
I dont know why people are complaining about the team, it seems to be well balanced, the only contensious issue i thought there might have been were the choice of reserves but as Frawls said "They aint going anyway".

In 1989 I bowled my only Presidents Shield as was selected to go to the Institute of Sport with 9 other male bowlers.
The assistant coach to Dick Ritger that year was Kevin Brawn and two of the bowlers that were there with me that year were Billy Gardiner and Paul Trotter. That was 11 years ago.
Potential was seen in both these bowlers way back then and for some reason or another it has taken them longer than expected to achieve the highest honour of representing thier Country(even though Billy bowled in a youth NZ v's Aus tourny in 94) both deserve every accolade especially Paul. It was very hard for young guys fresh out of juniors to break into the top ranks of Rep Bowling in Victoria for a long time when you had the likes of Len Hogg, Ian Bradford, Frank Ryan, Warren Stewart, Mark Malloy and Steve Kiss just to name a few who you had to displace to try and make a name for yourself. Paul finally did that and has got better ever since.
And to George, i thought you were unlucky to not get a reserve spot but as things go i woudlnt have picked a left hander at all in the team or as a reserve because there performances over the last 12 years at least have not been very impressive and if my memory serves me correct the only Left Handed men to do well in that time have been Paeng once and Kenny Ang from Malaysia.

Good luck to all involved and hopefully our Mens team can raise the once dominant profile of Australia which has been lacking for some time.

Robert Thompson

P.S. By the way Good luck to the womens team also.

hey thommo, stop being so arrogant
icon_wink.gif

he might have had 20 revs as a 10 year old, but we all have had to do the hard yards somewhere along the line.

the only bad choice i have seen billy make, was at junior sydney cup when he decided to do a bomb off the first floor of the sans souci motel, in the watchful eye of the manager, who happily removed billy from the motel immediately.

as for you, great to see you have the shoes back on and the ball in your hand, hope the comeback works well for you.
