2006 South Pacific Classic held in AMF Moorabbin Victoria this weekend– AMF Super Six Round 5

Jason Walsh of NSW and Rebecca Simpson of NT have taken out the 2006 SPC Classic and earned the right to represent Australia in 42nd AMF World Cup in November.

Jason Walsh is off to compete in the 42nd AMF World Cup in Caracas Venezuela in November after defeating 1996 SPC Champion Carl Bottomley, three-games-to-none in the final match of the 42nd running of South Pacific Classic presented by AMF.

In the best-of-five games match play final, Walsh won a close opener, 217-204, and then straight to a two game lead with another close match 237-235. Walsh clinched the 2006 title with a third and final close game 224-214.

Bottomley bowling in his first major tournament in over 4 months showed us why he is still highly regarded as one of Australia’s best on the lanes on any condition.

In the semi-finals Walsh eliminated 81 SPC champion Terry Wenban, 3-1, while the 96 SPC champion Bottomley, swept the other remaining New South Welshman, Andrew Frawley 3-2.

Qualifying on day 1
Fresh from his bronze medal performance at the Men’s World Championship, Jarrod Lean of New South Wales, took an early lead in only the first block of the tournament, rolling a 528 including a second game and tournament Hi Game score of 299.Current Australian Youth Team member Michael Zentveld set a blistering pace in the Men’s 2006 South Pacific Classic held in AMF Moorabbin Victoria this weekend. Zentveld from Harvey Bay in Queensland, shot a huge 4911 22-game series, an average of 223.23, to become the No. 1 seed for Sunday's single-elimination match play finals, and that earned him the bye in the first round.

After 494 block to start (249 and 245), Zentveld fired games of 203, 220 and 226 before he closed out the first round of Qualifying with a 1816 eight-game series (232,222 and 219) to lead day one on +216. Queenslanders filled the top three positions on the first day, with Hamish Rogers, +172 and Carl Bottomley, +143 rounding out the top three.

The second day became moving day for a lot of the bowlers; NSW’s Andrew Frawley being the most noticeable, starting his second stage of 8 Games qualifying sitting in 33rd position, Frawley shot a very impressive, 1793 eight game series +193 to move to 11th spot, Alex Krishnan of Victoria rounded out the top 28 and final qualifying position at +5.

Zentveld second eight games of qualifying on day two, got off to a slow start (183 and 186), Zentveld then fired 9x 200+Games out of the next 12 , as he closed out the round with an 519-Block (232 and 287) and impressive +511 for his 22 games. Paeng Nepomuceno of the Philippines was a distant second on +410 and local Victorian bowler and former Australian representative Mac Stewart qualified 3rd at + 368. Tasmanian bowler Hayden George rounded out the top 14 at +108. 2005 defending champion George Frilingos started steady in his title defense. Frilingos qualified in 10th spot with a 4684 pin fall 212.91 average +284.

The top 14 out of 70 players qualified for the single-elimination best-of-five-games match play finals on Sunday starting at 9.45am. The top 2 semi-final leaders, Zentveld of Queensland and Nepomuceno of the Philippines’ bypassed the first round with a bye to the second round.

4th Seed Brandon Qualischefski from Queensland (131,191,213,171=706) lost .05 to 3.5 to fellow Queenslander and 10th seed George Frilingos (199,243,213,198=853)

5th Seed Jarrod Lean of New South Wales (160,204,225,213=802) lost 3 games to 1 to 11th seed Queensland’s Carl Bottomley (181,209,200,236=826)

6th seed Western Australia’s Michael Muir (176,214,187,146,258=981) lost 2.5 to 3.5 to 12th seed Queensland’s Terry Wenban (159, 189, 194, 226, 258, =1026)

7th Seed Andrew Frawley of New South Wales (186,201,255,242=884) defeated 13th seed and fellow New South Welshman Michael Little (222,180,215,215=832) 3 games to1

8th Seed Jason Walsh also of New South Wales (213,222,221=656) defeated 14th seed Tasmanian Hayden George (192,198,199=589) 3 games to nil.

Men's Eliminator Round 2

Top seed and Queenslander Michael Zentveld (211,225,223,210,161=1030) went down to number 8 seed and current Australian and NSW Men’s captain Jason Walsh (179,200,274,213,214=1080). Walsh came from 2 games down to snatch the victory 3 games to two.

Second seed Paeng Nepomuceno of the Philippines (208,188,197=593) lost to 7th Seed Andrew Frawley of New South Wales (227,227,224=678) 3 games to nil.

10th seed Queensland’s George Frilingos (202,203,178,177=760) lost to fellow Queenslander and tournament 12th seed Terry Wenban (204,221,161,204=790) 3 games to 1

9th seed Matt Riley of New South Wales (207,247,246,160,205=1065) lost to tournament 11th seed Queensland’s Carl Bottomley (259,182,213,255,257=1166) 2 games to 3. This would have to have been match up of the round. Bottomley coming from 2 games to 1 down, to snatch the victory with games of, 255,257 to claim the match.

Men's Eliminator Round 3

Current Australian and NSW Men’s captain Jason Walsh (236,227,174,268=905) defeated former SPC champion of 1981 Terry Wenban (212,217,188,190=807) 3 games to 1.

Former 1996 SPC champion Queenslander Carl Bottomley (171,210,194,171,209=955) defeated NSW’s Andrew Frawley in another 5 game thriller (211,216,178,170,160=935) 3 games to 2.

Final Match

Jason Walsh (217,237,224=678) defeated Bottomley (204,235,214=653) 3 games to 1 in a close encounter.

Women’s Qualifying – Victorian Narelle Baker set the day one pace in the Women’s division with games of 209, 232, 255 & 279 for her first 2 blocks, finishing the day with an outstanding 225 average. Maxine Nable, +158, Rebecca Simpson, +86, and Cassie Staudinger, +80, filled the next 3 spots leading into day 2.

Narelle Baker struggled to find the same form that had placed her at the top of the leader board after the first day. Maxine Nable, +277, moved in on the lead with consistent scoring and by game 14 had secured the top spot. Narelle Baker, +266, hung on to second to receive the bye into the Eliminator Final. Standout on day two was former back-to-back AMF World Cup winner Jeanette Baker, +196, averaging 230 for the day and slipping into third position ahead of Ann-Maree Putney, +195, Rebecca Simpson, +163, Kate Wilton, +104, and defending champion Clair Johnston, +69.

Women’s Eliminator Finals

Cassie Staudinger 3 was never troubled by Nicole Addamo 0, while Kate Wilton and Ann-Maree Putney also accounted for their opposition in three games. Rebecca Simpson and Clair Johnston needed four while Jeanette Baker eliminated Jayde Flanagan in 5 games.

Round two saw Cassie Staudinger defeat top seed, Maxine Nable, in 5 games with Clair Johnston eliminating Narelle Baker by the same margin. Rebecca Simpson was stretched to 4 games before defeating Jeanette Baker while Kate Wilton got through to the next round in 3 games.

Both semi final matches went to 3 games with Cassie Staudinger and Rebecca Simpson booking their spots in the grand final.

Staudinger took the first game and an early lead but Simpson promptly replied winning the next 3 games and the title of the South Pacific Classic 2006 Champion.

I would just like to say congrats to Jason Walsh and Bec Simpson on winning the 2006 SPC well done... This was my first big tournament I've entered and even though I didn't bowl well I enjoyed myself and the people there were great. Many more tournments to come, see you all there.

I was lucky enough to spend two weeks in Korea with Walshy and he bowled awesome over and was a great leader to have in the team.

I believe he is in the best form i have ever seen him in and i am sure he is going to give the World Cup a huge crack.

Keep it up mate got few big months coming up over November, December and January :)

It's the best I've seen Jase ever bowl, I just wish I would have got to play him in the semi's (dam that Terry who character). I'm sure he'll give the World Cup a fair crack, alot better than the left handed hack who went over last year thats for sure :D

Bec, well done!! Your the best hack I know :D You beat a small yet stella field of the best women in the country, bowl your ass off over there and make sure you have fun!

Capo.... Mate it was a pleasure seeing you bowl great in Korea and im sure you only got better in the week break you had between the World Champs and SPC.
I have seen some of the best players around the world play on thousands of patterns and right now Walshy not only can compete with them, but has the skills and determination to beat every single one of them.

With all the luck in the world, both Kimberly and myself wish you the very best at the world cup.
We have no doubt that you have a great chance of winning the event and noone deserves the shot more than you!

Bec....your current from around the country shows why you are the girl who desereves the spot at the world cup. Ive been to the world cup and i have seen the competeion you will be up against and without a word of a lie, i know your game is a perfect match to the formatt and the ussual condition laid at the world cup.
