Sydney, 19 April 2012: Three days of fierce tenpin bowling competition came to a thrilling, high decibel, climax at Tenpin City Lidcombe this afternoon with South Queensland clinching victory with a clean sweep win of Boys, Girls, and Combined Team points in this year’s President’s Junior Interstate Shield tournament.
The South Queensland Boys and Girls teams finished with a combined total of 179.5 points, ahead of South Australia on 156.5 and Western Australia on 143.5 points, to retain their 2011 title.
The President’s Shield is one of the highlights of Tenpin Bowling Australia’s Junior National Championship – Australia’s premier tournament for under 18 year-olds. The Shield is junior bowling’s equivalent to the State of Origin, and is hotly contested by ten Zone teams from every State and Territory in Australia.
South Queensland (88 points), Northern NSW (77 points) and South Australia (76 points) took the top-3 honours in the Girls’ division while the placings in the Boys’ division had to be decided by pinfall after a tie occurred for third place between South Australia and North Queensland. The Boys’ division team line-up was South Queensland (91.5 points), Western Australia (81.5 points) and both South Australia and North Queensland (80.5 points) - South Australia taking the Bronze with 16,680 pins ahead of North Queensland’s 16,498 pinfall.
South Queensland Coach, Grant Otago, congratulated fellow competitors and thanked TBA tournament officials and the team from Tenpin City for presenting such a successful tournament in what he described as an ‘awesome venue’ and facilities.
Tournament Director, John Coxon then announced the 2012 All-Star teams, led by 2011 Boys’ All Star winner, Jarrod Langford from Ayr in North Queensland, and 15 year-old Strathpine bowler, Maddy Kemp in the Girls’ division.
The pin-flying action resumes tomorrow at 8.30am with the final qualifying squads of Singles and Doubles in the national Championship. Bowlers will then check in by 2.30pm for a 3pm start to the first rounds of the TBA Junior Masters.
