Morty,
The statement regarding sponsorship being more compelling for one big roll-off compared to two small ones, rings true. If I were in a position to sponsor a tourney, I'd think that way too.
However I don't believe it will solve the problem of the getting the 'masses' (or lack thereof at the moment) to attend roll-offs.
I have been thinking (I know it is hard but I have to do it every now and then
) and have come up with a couple of more questions:
You said development squad(S), is there a north and south dev squad?
What about a combined development squad?
For the people who do make it into the development squad (i.e. make it through the roll-off). Is attending the development squads mandatory?
Where I am coming from here is that the big problem is monetary and travel (not as an excuse, but as a reality) for BOTH north and south, for the roll-off. I would ASSUME (could be a bad assumption) that once one has 'MADE' the development squad they would be more willing to part with their hard earned.
In this way, having the two roll-offs to just determine the make-up of the development squad (no selection is present at that stage), in a central location for each respective zone (say, Townsville and Bundaberg), would make it more cost effective for both zones, without the 'selection' issues. This would make it approx five hours travel for all rather than 12 hours for some.
The 20 (10 from each zone) are then REQUIRED to undergo selection throughout THE development squad (making it clear that making it through roll-off, attendance of the ‘development squad’ or better put SELECTION SQUAD, is required and costs are inevitable). Maybe over a full and intense weekend at a central location (say, rotating yearly Mackay/Rockhampton) and this is where all of the selection processes are accomplished.
This will hopefully impose smaller costs to the masses rolling-off, hence getting a lot more to attempt roll-offs, while imposing the bulk costs to the few that make the development squad (the ones that would be more willing to outlay the larger costs as they have already 'made the cut', so to say and have a smaller pool to compete against. This would also put a greater impetus and importance to the development squad and in turn, making great QLD bowlers.
Understand though, I am not suggesting a change. I am just looking at obtaining information and throwing out ideas for all to mull over. Hopefully someone reading will have a brainwave that fits all of the pieces together, in a better way than I am suggesting.
