Adam Cuthbertson was a kid in the crowd at the SFS when Manly lost the grand final to Newcastle in 1997.
THE pain of watching the Sea Eagles devastating 1997 premiership loss to Newcastle from the stands is the prime motivator for rising young Manly forward Adam Cuthbertson.
The Manly junior watched in disbelief as Knights winger Darren Albert scored a try in the final minute to rob the Sea Eagles of the premiership a decade ago.
That defeat was Manly's last premiership tilt.
Cuthbertson says he is still haunted by the loss and has no intentions of a repeat 10 years on.
``It's a massive motivator for me,'' he said after a relaxed training run at Narrabeen yesterday.
``That day in general is a motivator to get through the semis, not to hold back and leave nothing in the tank.
``I was devastated and copping it from all the Knights' fans.
``If we get the opportunity (at the grand final) . . . it won't happen again.''
The 22-year-old Avalon junior opened his NRL finals campaign with an outstanding performance in Manly's 30-6 disposal of South Sydney on Saturday night.
Cuthbertson's efforts won't be enough to stop Australian prop Brent Kite returning straight back into the starting pack for Saturday week's preliminary final, but his game has gained some lofty praise.
``He's got great skill levels,'' captain Matt Orford said of Cuthbertson.
``When he puts his head down and gets balance in his game he can do anything.''
Manly coach Des Hasler said he expects injured pair Chris Hicks (ankle) and Glenn Stewart (ankle) to play in the preliminary final against the winner of the Cowboys/Warriors semi-final at the Sydney Football Stadium on September 22.
``I'm very confident they will play,'' Hasler said.
Fullback Brett Stewart (hand) will also be there after sustaining a minor injury at training yesterday morning.
``I could play tomorrow if I had to,'' he said with a laugh.
Kite and fellow forward Glenn Hall both trained separately yesterday
while Orford did not train as he continues to recover from his heavy knock suffered against Souths.

gees fellas he must be a real good actor if hes still "faking" it 3 days after getting the knock. Some people need to give themselves an uppercut
