First non-plastic ball

How long should someone use a plastic ball before switching to something better? Assume an average of 120 with a Maxim, no improvement for some weeks now. Been Bowling since mid Nov 2004.

Should I get a secondhand one and see how it goes or buy a new one instead. Or not get one yet.

it is possible to average up to 200 with a plastic ball pending on the conditions

120 average says you get more counts less than 8 than you get above.

no point looking for strikes, until your putting it around the mark at least a times a game minimum

i maybe old fashioned but get to 150, then get a good ball, get to 175+ and then goto fingertip

It depends on what you feel comfortable with really, and if you do by a second hand reactive, seek some coaching and that will help.

You don't say how heavy your ball is, maybe you just need to get a heavier ball and have it drilled to hook.

If you don't want to change the weight in your ball,a reactive ball may be the way to go, you will get a better reaction down the back end as reactive balls go a lot different to a plastic ball, along with some coaching and some patience your ave should improve in due course

I wouldn't go out and buy a new one, see if there are any second hand ones around to try first.

Cheers Kerri

Yeah or a Urethane ball even i went from plastic to urethane then urethane to reactive reactive boosted my average to 160 from about 140 but thats just me

yeah man, reactive balls make a really big difference if you hook the ball. I would normally go one pound up very time i buy a ball, but thats just me.just get a cheap reactiveb ball and see what you think

Sorry house ball to urethane

11 lbs Brunswick Attack Zone....Still Got it and i bowled a 200 with it the other week even though i practically chucked it for the first few frames

I would have to totally agree with Craig here. I think thinking about changing balls might be a little bit premature. I had my average up in the 180's bowling conventional style with an 11lb plastic ball before I changed over to finger tip and bought a BullWhip. Are you bowling finger tip yet or not?

The most important thing is if your wanting to bowl with a hook, get a coach to teach you, DO NOT take the thumb out and trying to hook.

Personally I think plastic balls are a waste of time for a beginner, and the best thing in todays condition is to start out with a low level reactive asap. It helps with pin actions, and when you are learning to hook the ball you don't look stupid trying to hook a plastic ball.

A tornado, a big-hit, an AMF scamp and (even though its brunswick) those power groove things are your best bets for brand new, where as if your going second hand, any ball with 500+ games on it will react like an entry level ball.

hope this helps dude!

Thanks all. Still undecided.

I use a 14lb ball, not fingertip. Normally I wouldn't have considered getting a "good" ball yet but I've been offered either a Tornado or a Scout for $100 and either seem like a bargain.
