Whether the 19th man was involved or not, the man he 'replaced' was directly involved in the play that levelled the game.
I don't believe it was intentional. I think the fine is a farce (are the swans actually going to miss $25k?).
Personally I would remove all points that were scored during the infraction (which was only 1 anyway, wasn't it?) and then enforce the result with the revised score
Sydney made the mistake, granted.....but under the rules the side can not be penalised with loss of score at the time unless the opposing captain asks for a head count & it is proven there are extra men on the ground.
Even though the player ultimately replaced was involved in a scoring passage of play, which as it turns out DID have a bearing on the game - there should be no change in the result as the count was not performed..
I think the fine is ridiculous too considering it is an antiquated rule requiring the captain asking for the count. IF the rules allowed for television intervention to justify the number on the field - it would be a different matter, however the rules don't allow that, so...........
This is where the lines are starting to become blurred between football being a sport where there are proper laws and procedures, and some Big Brother-style dumb TV-game where any couch-punter or media hack trying to get his mug in the local rag or on telly can bleat long and loud to try and effect change.
Just like the York Park incident when Freo got the points against St Kilda, either change the law (why not, they keep changing the rules every season anyway ) or under the laws of the game at the current time the match is played the result must stand, unfair or not.
A more pressing concern is how many incidents of having too many players on the ground has been happening of late.
Needs to be looked into.
Imagine if the North Melbourne captain had called for a head count. Sydney score would have been wiped to zero(that is the rule) and then the Sydney fans would have torn the place apart. there would have been deaths and massive propity damage. you can't tell me that is somthing that should be the responibiliy of a captain.the rule needs changing
