Dobson Memorial

Okay, now that the announcements been made, I'd like to voice something I'm sure many many bowlers are thinking - and raise some discussion about a memorial of some sort.

John has given an incredible amount to this sport, and done a lot to contribute to the way our sport is today (I say that in a good sense), and I think it fitting that somewhere we commemorate this contribution.

Personally, I'd like to see the Holt committee initiate plans for a trophy event at this years Holt championships. I understand the schedule's already there, but a little shuffling may be warranted - and I suspect even if it means reducing squad allocations, those bowlers inconvenienced there would be understanding. I think it should be an unrestricted tournament that all can enter, with perhaps a portion of the prizefund committed to relevant medical research.

Alternatively, a "Fair Play" or "Sportspersons" type of award during the Holt Interstate event would be in good spirit of the memory. My personal opinion is that limiting possibilities to only the interstate event participants is not preferred way to do it.

To the Holt Committe, I suspect you guys are ahead of the game here, any plans been discussed? What's the general opinion on this concept?

Well thought out Jeff, what about naming the restricted masters at the Darryl Holt Challenge the Dobson Memorial Trophy Event

Whilst not involved with the Holt Challenge, might I suggest that perhaps the Opening Squad Tournament, which teams have always participated in with the greatest display of sportsmanship, camaraderie and fair play, be called the John Dobson Perpetual Trophy?? The opening tournament is already in the schedule, is on EVERY year, is open to ALL bowlers, and would be, I feel, a very fitting tribute to John.

John Dobson was apart of our Nationals events for many many years. It would be fitting to have some sort of tournament at this years Nationals in memorial to John. It would be fitting to have a mixed event. As in mixing scratch bowlers with handicapped bowlers. I'm sure many other people have different ideas.

Without wanting to start a flame thread out of this, please guys if you want to get stuck into me after this comment do it PM or start a "Flame Jeff" thread, respect the spirit of this here;

I disagree that TBA Nationals is the place to have it, TBA discarded John (and the rest of us in the tournament team for that matter) very flippantly and for the good of the sport, John went on to the Holt Steering Committee. It is for these two reasons I mentioned Holt before, I have no personal interest in Holt - it's simply more appropriate in my opinion.

After that, agree with you 100% :)

Looks like I need some more inside news of all the happenings of the TBA! :p

In that case, I agree something should happen at the Holt Challenge. Maybe even add an extra day to the tournament itself. It would be fitting to add a Memorial event this year!

I hadn't meant to imply there was a great war and conspiracy or anything, more that Johns tenure within TBA was abandoned, and his interest in improving the sport drew him into Holt.

Very sad to hear about John Dobsons passing. He did believe in us all and was behind WDV all the way. When TBA said goodbye to him he did not hesitate to help get the Holt Challenge off the ground as he loved his Tenpin Bowling and as Bronni said, and l agree, the Opening Squad Tournament to have a perpetual trophy named in this great mans honour.

I also think a tribute to John at the dinner dance as well and maybe all bowlers wear black arm bands during the tournament in rememberance of this true gentleman. Let us all make this a tournament that John would be proud of.

A great man who gave his all to the sport of Tenpin Bowling. Rest in peace my friend.

I need to make an amendment.
I disagree that TBA Nationals is the place to have it, in my opinionTBA discarded John ... very flippantly and for the good of the sport, John went on to the Holt Steering Committee.
The words in my opinion, were missing the first time around. I apologise that it seemed I was sniping at TBA, I am not trying to influence anybody's opinion here.

The simple fact is I believe Holt is more appropriate and without going into detail, I have my own reasons for that. Others are welcome to disagree with me.

To John's Family my sincerest condolences.
He will be sadly missed.

I am with you Bronni and naming the Openning Squad Trophy at the Holt Challenge, "The John Dobson Memorial Or Perpetual Trophy" would be fitting of a Person of his esteem.

RIP John
