Could someone clarify the rules re cleaning and adjusting ball surface during play - use of cleaning spirits, abrasion and ball polishes. What and when.
Leanne

why don't you look in the rule book or the all the other posts on this site about these topics.

Once you start bowling you cannot adjust anything. except putting tape in the thumb hole.

Well the TBA rulebook states that nothing can be used to alter the surface of a ball during competition or within a series of games. All that can be used is a clean towel to wipe marks, dirt and oil off. For further clarification, look it up on the TBA site.

Hope that helps.

4.11.2 Altering the surface of bowling balls is permitted during the Official Practice and between the blocks of games. It is not allowed during the practice session immediately proceeding each block, or during any block of games.
WTBA Rule book.
I did not find the information in the TBA Rules and Regs, that is wy I asked, thanks xballs. So I gather you can change the surface condition but at specified times?

Have read the rules, was interested to know the interpretation of the rules.

TBA: alterations...not permitted during series or session of games
WTBA: permitted during the Official Practice and between the blocks of games

Vis: tournament, 2 game blocks, can adjust the surface of the ball during the break between blocks.

Therefore you can alter during the competition. You can adjust after starting bowling.

This was something noted at the weekend during Illawarra Junior Champioinships and there was some confusion and we did not have access to the web.

Thanks, leanne.

It depends on the tournament format.
E.g. 10 game tournament with lane change every 2 games ie 5 two game blocks. Cannot adjust surface between blocks as all 10 are considered the session of consecutive games.
If the format is event based ie singles, doubles and teams then I would believe that the surface can be altered between each "event".

The rule regarding the cleaning of balls has been ambiguous for a long time. Alex Popov, the TBA CEO has taken the issue to discuss at the WTBA meeting currently being held. The existing rule will be revised to include scenarios of when the ball surface can be cleaned and when it can not. The revision will define in detail what constitutes a session of continuous games. The revisions will apply to ball cleaning and the smoking rules. The rule revision will be made as soon as possible, hopefully within the next two weeks.

Strange Situation at Nationals last year.

Several bowlers who were sitting out a game at DeVeer and Rachuig came into our proshop for surface adjustments - we qualified we were able to do it first.

My question here then: does sitting out a game in a continuous series such as those events constitute a break? Bear in mind this is a TEAM EVENT and the TEAM is continuously bowling in that session.

Food for thought..........
