Bowling for your education, super impressive

Hi Jay,

What I liked was a comment made by one of the bowlers. Play your shot safe for an 8 count or higher and make your spares. The strikes will come. Good advice for any bowler on a tough pattern.

For the kids, two ball limit would save the parents a bomb in equipment costs. Teaches the kids to adapt.

This is what I was always taught, if you keep chucking 8 or 9's the strikes will eventually come to you, its a good theory!

I thought it was a winner take all arrangement but apparently the girl got 16,000 towards her education as a prize for 2nd and the other finalists got some prizes too

Probably a touch unfair having the guy and girl showdown like that considering the guy is going to have a small advantage (based on Kegels research on male v female hitting power) however anything can happen in 2 games I guess. Good to see so many people participating too. The 2 ball concept was a great concept too...

I wouldn't mind seeing things like entry fee's and sponsors for this event. I mean $16,000 for 2nd place is HUGE; wheres this money coming from??

I believe the winners didn't get cash, they get the prize money paid into what's called a S.M.A.R.T (Don't ask me what that stands for) account, which can only be used to pay for college education... Not sure exactly where the money came from, but I believe it may have been privately funded, at least in part, by Gary Beck himself. George would probably know more...

I found the manual pin pals an interesting concept.

What button do i press for a re-rack ?? :)

I do like the pins that will never be off centre.. :D The little rod that comes up underneath the pin is quite smart... :) Wouldn't want to keep the rods up though during a bowl! lol!

If Gary Beck does partially contribute to this prize; hats off to him!

Gary Beck has done a lot of things, with his own money, to try and promote & grow the sport of bowling in America. Remember the heavier gold pins in the PBA a few years back? Gary Beck was involved with that also. We need more Gary Beck's in bowling, all over the world!! If only they could clone him :D

Gary Beck is probably bowling's greatest independent promoter since the war - at least since Eddie Elias [founder of the PBA].

Beck has been around a while and has unquestioned credibility - he has his detractors of course - mostly those that can't see the woods for the trees. Beck is also a realist and understands that the sport of bowling is in a massive decline - and he makes his point in a recent article on the decline of Youth Bowling in the US. I recommend this very sobering reading...particularly to those that can't grasp the impact of excessive high scoring. Here is just one point he makes in his article.

.........."Through attempts to appeal to everyone by making everyone equal (handicap, easy lane conditions and even bumpers), bowling’s relationship between effort and reward has been destroyed.

The modern game places too much emphasis on technology and too little on technique, further weakening the relationship between effort and reward"...............................read on here:

The money for the SMART accounts can only be used for college costs. Which includes everything from tuition, living fee's, and even buying a car I believe. Some kids get some pretty good rides through college because of scholarship from the school, and their own SMART accounts.

The spotting rods (don't know their real names) are from pre-pinsetter days. Well before bowling in Australia. Modern pins still have the countersunk holes in the base for that express purpose. A good pin boy can get your ball back and rack 'em faster than a machine! Dangerous work though!

Thats pretty cool ay! And they dont break down like machines; just get sick on the odd occasion :p

Wish there was Junior/Youth like that here in Australia. :(

Cow - US college fees are expensive as I think you well know from experience. I believe at USC [as an example] the annual costs run close to $60,000 including tuition, room and board etc - tuition alone would be the better part of $45- $50k of that. Even in a lesser college - say somewhere in the mid west - the fees run up to $40,000 a year...and the terms are four years mostly. These young people need all the help they can get.

I'm well aware, and some of these young kids are pretty damn good. All the Youth level bowlers can't compete for money, only for SMART money, for some of the guys I bowled with, this added up to quite a lot over time. Maybe I was lucky enough to be at WSU with some of the kids who had done really well through their younger years, but between their SMART accounts and the scholarships from the school as well, most of them were doing ok.

I don't think WSU fee's were that high TBH, even including the accommodation costs, and maybe that played a part in how I perceived it. Also, the local bowlers got it at a massively discounted rate, which probably helped as well.

Cheers, Cow
