All i have to say about this captain stuff for the boys team is all a load of BULLS**T. I was involved with the ACT & Southern NSW Shield team for 9 years, the last 7 making the team and the last 3 was selected captain. SELECTED BY MY TEAM MATES. Not once did the committee have any say in the selection of the captains, it was always voted by the kids, and always should be. The kids will choose who they think is most equipped to make the correct decisions for the team, but most importantly will select who they look up to and respect as bowlers and people. This being said, the kids may not have selected the most obvious candidate (being cowland) but in the end the captain still would have been selected by THE TEAM and that would be ok.
As far as the guys who are in the spotlight go, congratulations on making the team, Michael being his second year, and Ian his first time in shield. Nothing against Ian at all, but too the committee who made this selection, you cant have a rookie as captain, especially when you have someone as experienced as Stephen in the team. Someone correct me if im wrong, but the reason given for Stephen not being selected as captain was because "HE IS NOT A TEAM PLAYER". Im not sure what the committees definition of a team player is but it seems that someone who screams their lungs out for 3 days straight, encourages his team members non stop through good and bad and bowls well enough while doing the above to make 2 ALL STAR TEAMS IN A ROW does not fit into that category of a "TEAM PLAYER".
Anyway, congrats to all who made it, I hope all the politics doesnt ruin your fun that is President Shield.
Parents should stay to booking the rooms, transporting the kids around and let the kids have some FUN, cause thats what its all about FUN. Stop trying to control everything, leave politics out and let the kids bowl.
Thats my 2c worth
