2009 SA Seniors Classic

After reading all the posts, I have come to the conclusion, I'm glad I'm playing golf. Remember guys you are not playing for a million dollars here, just go out there and enjoy yourselves and have fun.I've got a suggestion, why don't you all go and bowl in the car park, could be a good pattern out there!!!!!!

Cheers Lovey

Hi Tony
Can you take me out of squad, unfortunatly good old JETSTAR (My A_ _ ) have decided to cancell the Friday flight from Darwin
thanks Chris kirwin

Lovey.

You are quite correct. If not golf, any other sport would do.
However, so many senior bowlers choose Tenpin Bowling as their preferred recreation.

We are obviously not all gifted in the skills required to excel in our chosen sport but still we commit no less effort nor money to compete.

The point that still is overlooked is that most senior bowlers travel to National events for the enjoyment of the sport. It is fortunate that they can afford the ever increasing cost. If the enjoyment of their chosen sport is overwhelmed by non realistic lane conditions, then these bowlers may not return. Do the maths. Less bowlers, less prize fund. Less tournaments.

This is not directed at you, but to the minority who think that their personal skills and high self asteem is more important than the future of the game.

Hi all, as I said it was nice not to be in the firing line and that may change and that it did, it got the discussions going and opinions flying and that is what it's all about to look at the differing points of views to add value to arguments about a whole range of things, in this instance the lane patterns, suitable for the people bowling on them.
We all would like to hear from everyone, however not everyone is as straight up as the combatants in this forum, and some people would be intimidated by the possible responses from "role" models such as the great Tony Stoppel, and I use that phrase with all sincerity as that man, for the most of us, has been a legend over a number of years, but it must be something with the lefties, maybe the part of the brain they almost utilise in their thinking.
The whole gist of this Tony and whoever may have an interest in this, is not what you or I or Suzzane cares about but we speak up and care for the silent majority who don't speak up, the senior community as a whole, some things we say is said with tongue in cheek, the same as you, however the real concern, and this always should be, is for the Mr & Mrs average who always turns up to try, compete and enjoy the sport, not simply to become frustrated and be a donator to prize funds.
Although I write novels, the information contained in the body of those novels does have some merit, when TD's are setting conditions for tournament bowlers, they firstly should understand who they are setting them for, in our case, and I am not ashamed to be called a senior, for the majority who cannot bowl on tougher conditions, as I said in my previous, I didn't want an easy condition, I made that bold as you obviously didn't read that part in my last novel, but wanted a fair condition for all the seniors different techniques, this is the part a number of TD's do not understand, why do you think the seniors circuit is so strong, so competitive so passionate .... because we set conditions for us, not someone who thinks they know what we want, we didn't follow the super 6 or open adult tournament conditions , or even the sports patterns because we are not the same, and where are those tournaments now...ah yes dying ... our seniors and I am talking the over 55's find it difficult to hit the same 3 board spread let alone a single board needed to compete on this type of condition, or even have the strength to continue doing it for 8 games....sorry guys not meaning to portray you as fragile, tottering oldies...far from it...the big picture is doesn't matter what conditions are laid down, the better bowlers normally would still be there, and even if we are chasing Tony Stoppel why not chase him on conditions that make people feel good about the sport, hey you know me Tony, I'd be in a **** sandwich but I don't like bread ...The reason I chose "The Devil's Advocate" as my handle is in its definition ("In common parlance, a devil's advocate is someone who takes a position he or she disagrees with for the sake of argument. This process can be used to test the quality of the original argument and identify weaknesses in its structure.") Are we looking at a weakness in this tournaments structure....hhmm
Anyway have a nice weekend and I'll see you all and hopefully with a drink or two next weekend ...ps I am still goiing to the ATBSO Nationals coz I like the SA's company we have a good laugh at them...sorry with them....
pps.. and they lived happy ever after ...look for the next book in reputable bookstores

Paul,

I have always agreed with your posts, I believe in looking after the majority.
I have also come across to those as being arrogant or whatever to most......
but I joined the seniors to probably just starting traveling and trying to have fun again.
I didn't set the patterns in QLD, Canberra, Sydney Melb or for that matter here SA for next week end. I just suggested , hey , lets suggest in another post we use the Broadway pattern since there going to use it later in Canberra.......only to be set on upon by the selected few that obviously cant bowl on it!.....
What I'm trying to say, I don't make the decisions ever , period!
I agree seniors like to walk away from a tournament feeling good if they shoot well.
Tell me we have bowled on some of those conditions this year, there are still quite a few that still didn't bowl that well even on those.........I dont see any of them commenting on here ?????
Wonder what they think, but I suppose your looking at the big picture!!!
To me, like I have always maintain don't care what pattern is put down, because they don't bother me, if I bowl crap after spending my money to travel, I don't care, I just put it down down to "oh Well" and move on.

It still puzzles me in this comment about Mr. and Mrs Average ??
About them becoming frustrated, your saying if they shoot good games they won't be? There still going to finish miles behind the front runners (even more on easier conditions) but if they shoot good games it's ok, correct me if I'm not reading it right??

I don't have a problem with that, at all. And I'm sure they won't either.
From what I have seen it's just one big get together, bowl, catch up with interstate people's and throw a bit of bowling in between.

Because with the exception of a small minority not matter what condition you put down, with a few changes, the outcome will be the same.

I'm starting to think what a bowler made a comment in a earlier post is maybe it's best not to post the pattern to be used, because and here it is again....."You will not please everyone" .. Just make it a surprise.

A attended a couple of meetings that involved the selection or criteria of making the Mmmm "National Team" and these are the tournaments you want to expect the conditions or patterns to be enjoyable to bowl............Gee Will you get that same consideration to the teams that go away. ????
And we even get rating points and be called a national seniors ranked tournament ????
You see where I'm going here.............................
I don't understand
???

Oh well, I'm just going to turn up and enjoy the bowling, because that's what I intended to do this year plus many more to come hopefully ????, because I think it's fun to catch up with bowlers like yourself 'Terry' plus others...........

Cheers

Tony

Hi Tony yes you are reading Paul's comment right... as me being one of the Mr Averages l personally would feel better at the end of a tournament bowling 195 - 200 average and yes you and Brenton, Paul etc will all be in the 230's but in one's self you do feel better and you have fun with everyone where as if one is struggling around 160 to 170 and frustrated you certainly dont feel like socialising with anyone... Ok to you big guns this might sound ridiculous, but it is true and at the end of the day one will come back and support the tournaments... For example the condition in Canberra this year was in my opinion not good and l would have to think very very carefully if l would support that tournament next year....At the end of the day it is about having fun for most of us and enjoying the bowling but if the bowling is crap due to hardish conditions then the fun disappears as well.....just my two cents worth... and now bring it on.... cheers Tony Long

Fair enough, like I have always said look after the majority, there the ones that make or break a tournament.
It really make no difference to me, I'm going to be there anyway, If Stacey lets me of course :)
I couldn't imagine a seniors tournament without "Paul's" big smiling face there!!!:) :)
Let's hope the manager changes his mind about the pattern !!
The way my body feels at the moment I could do with a pattern that requires little effort.
Cheers
Tony

Tony Long Suggested I jump in and have a look at this thread. Thanks Tony - that was a good way to kill an hour. Notwithstanding this, and being very much on the "Mr Average" side of things, I do have a perspective to share.

When the top bowlers have a bad day due to tough conditions, their average at a tournament might drop by 40 pins (give or take a few) whereas my average will also drop but not normally to the same degree. Therefore tough conditions can work in my favour (as an equaliser) but when looking at the difference in positions on the table - bugger all changes. That being said, and this is where I do again agree with Tony Long, it is always more enjoyable at the end of a tournament to have a higher average and feel that I have been more competative. I'm not a rock you know - I have feelings.:)

If I was participating in tournaments for the prize money alone - it would be a long time between drinks. I enjoy the company and friendship of people like Paul "can't carry" Terry and if we put conditions down that erodes the participating numbers, it is in my opinion, an error in judgement. Make it competitive by all means but make it an enjoyable event that will bring back people next year.

I don't know who makes the final decision on conditions but for what its worth, put a pattern down that will get everyone back next year.

See you all Saturday (I hope) - Glenn Lennell

To All bowlers, there no guarantee, but I hear that the Manager, after a lot of discussion with his tech, may chanage the pattern this week-end, especially after reading the posts, more so from "Paul" who I have seen this year to be a up front spokes person for the Seniors needs.

Tomorrow hopefully we will hear something.

Will advise myself or Steve will post any changes if any.

Cheers

Tony

P.S. Glenn ,totally agree with you as well. Manager makes the decision on patterns, and discussed with the Commitee I assume, as for me, I just post it!

Well said, Glenn Lennell......Its quite simple really, if you DONT keep getting the Mr and Mrs Average to these tournaments, guess what, there will be just 4 or 5 high rollers competing amongst themselves, and somehow l dont think the comp would survive... cheers Tony Long

OK, girls hopefully we will hear from the manager today!

cheers

Tony

P.S. Hey Brenton, I didn't see a response to see what pattern your getting in Maniila, a trip I'm sure is costing thousands for some!

To everyone coming to Adelaide to bowl this weekend, I hope you all have an enjoyable time in our fair city.
This is always a great tournament, and I'm sure this weekend will be no different.
Don't worry too much about the condition, it's a high scoring centre and I'm sure this weekend will be no different.
Unfortunately, I won't be there. I have a wedding to go to in Mt Gambier, so I'll miss this tournament for the first time ever.
Enjoy the tournament, enjoy eachothers company and see you all back here next year.

Hey Greig,

Why don't you phone your scores in from Mt. Gambier...........
I'm sure your daughter won't mind ?
