Technical Committee announces Oil Patterns for World Youth Championships 2006
Bowlingcenter Schillerpark in Berlin, Germany (July 21-30, 2006)

The WTBA Technical Committee has released the oil patterns for the 9th World Youth Championships 2006 in Berlin, Germany. The event will be held from July 21 through 30, 2006 at bowling center Schillerpark, the biggest bowling center in Germany with 46 lanes on one floor.

The lane surface at Schillerpark is a FUNK-made synthetic lane surface and the original installation was also performed by FUNK.

KegelTedThompson.jpg "During the initial inspection of the bowling center by ETBF Technical Delegate René Exelmans, the lane surface was found to be clearly out of specification. Recent adjustments have been made to correct this which is why it has taken longer than normal for the oil patterns to be announced." said Ted Thompson, technical consultant to the WTBA Technical Committee and Kegel's representative in Europe (Kegel is the official lane maintenance provider of the WYC).

"In the testing phase of the oil patterns, it was found this particular lane surface plays very slick." Thompson explained. "Therefore the patterns were shortened a couple feet from normal long and short pattern distances. Instead of the normal 33-35 feet and 43-45 feet range of distance, the WYC oil patterns will be 32 and 42 feet long.

Thompson further stated, "Federation coaches and players should always take their local lane playing environment and lane machine characteristics into consideration when trying to duplicate a posted oil pattern. The best thing they can do is too keep an open mind when practicing for any major event. The oil pattern is only one piece to the puzzle."

JohnDavisCEO John Davis, the WTBA Technical Committee Chairman added, "We suggest that players practice on shorter and longer distances of the pattern. Also practice with higher and lower amounts of oil. We are seeing bowlers as a whole playing the lanes more properly than the past couple of years. It seemed as the modern players had very little practice playing the outside of the lane. That is changing. Being able to play the outside 3 or 4 board area of the lanes is not only challenging but enjoyable. So practice all kinds of variations of each the long and the short."
