AUSTRALIA: The spectacular Opening function for Sydney’s newest bowling centre and entertainment complex, Tenpin City, was the perfect choice for the presentation ceremony of the 2007 World Bowling Writers ‘World Bowler of the Year’ Award.
Outstanding performances throughout 2004 at Zone and World Youth level and open tournaments in Asia, Europe and the USA earned Jason Belmonte his first World Bowling Writers’ ‘World Bowler of the Year’ Award in early 2005. ‘Belmo’ was inducted into the Orange Sporting Hall of Fame in the same year and throughout 2005 and 2006 won a stunning series of titles nationally and internationally. He was the only amateur included in ten-day exhibition team invited to tour Japan with American pro bowlers and crowned his career as a Youth bowler in December 2006 as Champion of the 7th MILO International All Stars in Malaysia.
His inaugural year as an Adult bowler in 2007 was a spectacular success, collecting an unequalled series of national and international titles against the world's best amateur bowlers, and culminating in his second World Bowling Writers ‘World Bowler of the Year’ Award for 2007.
Already this year, Belmo has chalked up wins in two of bowling’s most coveted tournaments, blitzing all-comers at the 2008 Mini-Eliminator Amateur Only Classic in Las Vegas in February and clinching his third decisive victory in the Kuwait International Open, at the end of April.
As a popular, articulate sporting hero, Jason is part of the Living Legends program, a community and schools-based initiative of the South Australian Department of Health and has also been recruited as an international spokesperson for youth, and the burgeoning two-handed approach delivery, by the United States Bowling Congress on behalf of the World Tenpin Bowling Association.
Earlier this year, ‘Belmo’ and 20 other bowling legends from Scandinavia, Europe, Asia and South America participated in a five-day international coach/instructor training seminar at USBC headquarters in Milwaukee. Developing elite athletes throughout the world is regarded as crucial to the sport’s future and Jason and the newly trained coaches will certify USBC coaches in their home countries and regions, who in turn will develop more high-level bowlers.
"USBC is proud to team up with Jason as a spokesperson … (he) embodies a bold new direction for the sport of bowling,” said USBC Chief Operating Officer, Kevin Dornberger recently. “He's young, athletic and employs a new, powerful two-handed style that's appealing to many youth bowlers," he added.
The WBW ‘Bowler of the Year’ award ceremony at Tenpin City included the screening of an entertaining news story, courtesy of Prime Television, documenting ‘Belmo’s’ outstanding career.
The presentation of the prestigious Award was made by Association Vice-President, Lynne Clay following further commentary and congratulations by AAP journalist, sports official and veteran bowler, Ted Simmons OAM.
Belmo’s achievements were heartily applauded by the 200+ guests and media representatives present for the launch of Sydney’s latest new bowling centre developed by a consortium including the Belmonte and Cannone families, and renowned coaching duo, Andrew Frawley and Paul Delany.
