Will you be using your laptop on the plane?

Computer websites and forums report that Dell Apple IBM Fujitsu and Toshiba have all recalled laptop models with Lithium Ion Sony batteries.
Surprisingly Sony have reported no problems with their own brand.

This follows laptops exploding and bursting into flames when the batteries overheat.

Domestic aircraft dont have the luxury of a power socket in the armrest as do International flights. Virgin Blue still have no problem with domestic passengers using laptops but Qantas has forbidden their use.

That's interesting because the following is taken directly from the QANTAS website:

Using Dell or Apple laptop computers inflight
Question
Can I use my Dell or Apple laptop computer inflight?
Answer
Dell and Apple have recently issued a battery recall. For details on the affected batteries visit the Dell or Apple website.

Dell and Apple laptop computers affected by the recall may still be carried in both your checked and carry-on baggage.

Dell and Apple Laptop computers affected by the recall, that have not had the battery replaced, can only be used inflight by:

1. Battery power only, or
2. Aircraft mains power - but only with the battery removed from the computer. (Removal of the battery should occur before connecting to aircraft power.)

I guess we'll see on Friday during the trip down to Tassie.
