Who Has The Best Center In Victoria And Who Has The Worst???

i might aswell start it off i think forest hill and ed fleming lanes have the best centers and i'd say the worst would have to be morwell for sure bowled there once and they couldn't even keep oil on the lanes for a game how bads that

10 Things we love about "Royal" Northcote

I'll start it off and will be interested to see if anyone can challenge the history of this center....

"Royal" Northcote - following reasons

1) Only true wooden amf center left in the state still being used for major tournaments

2) Only 40+ year old center still in existence

3) Only Victorian center that holds true averages

4) Still manages to scratch the heads of even the best bowlers to work out lanes

5) As recently as only two months ago 300 games are still being bowled there

6) Only center to successfully (largely due to Iris Griffiths) to
be able to run it's own center championships open to other centers and disabilities

7) One of the very few centers where you aren't just another revenue bringer, the staff remembers your name

8) Only center this year that will wear something close to their hearts to honour someone who would bend over backwards to help out their home center (sorely missed)

9) Only center where the loyal bowlers are willing to put up with being bagged for still bowling there

10) Only center to have a real life mascot - we all love you geoff

Now can anyone beat that... Special mention to "tonx" there was an eleventh reason that being we are glad to see the back of your head... have a nice evening

Craig i get the same felling that is isn't missed at all well they will have tp put up with him for 2 days in december

Craig & Chris

your suspisions are correct thank god it is only two days

When we talk about the worst centre in Victoria, I'd just like to defend Morwell. I'm sure Joe would hate to see his lanes branded Victoria's worst! It can be a tough gig in country centres, as i'm sure everyone is aware.
I know that Joe is putting in a lot of effort to get Morwell's lanes up to scratch. I didn't bowl Youth trials, but I did bowl Youth Cup there early in the year, we were treated to a condition that was not too bad at all. And the centre itself is a fine establishment, plenty of space, lovely staff etc! And some half decent bowlers too! :)

Put it this way, I think there are probably several centres that haven't come as far in their development as Morwell. Take a centre like Sale for example, I grew up bowling there and love it to bits, but the fact is it is impossibly tough with such a small community to create top class lanes that compare with Melbourne centres. I think for those who bowled it, Sale Cup was a big indicator of the gap as it currently stands.

I guess i just have a soft spot for the country centres that i started out bowling in. No doubt, places like Ed Fleming are fantastic centres, but it's a tough call to compare them directly with the smaller country centres. Coming to Melbourne to bowl at Chadstone was the biggest shock of my life, due to the difference in lane conditions from Sale. But the country centres do the best they can with what they have, and are doing their best to bridge the gap.

best centre: greensborough. love the fact that all the staff are friendly, and that they are an affordable centre to practise at.

worst centre: gunna have to go with essendon. no offense to them, but chunks out of the lanes are kinda unwanted while bowling.

richofanclub: please say these sort of things to my face or at least add your name to the posts that you make, that is just pathetic. I have never done anything to bag the centre in my life, if you have a problem please come down on thursday night and explain it to me. If you are man enough???

the question was the best centre, not the worse

if morwell is such a bad place, why has it produced more junior bowlers in the last 25 years than every centre in victoria put together???

we might give them a hard time on here, but we respect them as high as anyone

my favourite centre in victoria is shepparton, may play a lil swingy, but the staff always treat you well and know bowling, the lanes score well, the food in the restaurant is good and affordable, the centre is always presented well

i will go nearly anywhere to bowl

there are places that have been blacklisted, i chose not to waste my money on them, and i refuse to come on here metioning them, as that would be free advertising

a good centre doesn't have to have a kegel in it, but it helps

Sorry Chucky, but the question did ask about the best and the worst centres. I can't say that i've bowled in every centre round the place, but Shep certainly was a quality venue. In the city, probably go with Ed Fleming or Moorabbin. In the country, i would actually have to say that Morwell is my favourite, as you always get good service, good lanes, and a few sly remarks from Joe. Can't argue with the pedigree from Morwell either. Look at the Arnold girls, Deb Bosma, Dillan DeMather, Brett Lacey just to name a few of late.

Morwell the worst centre disappointing to here you say that Chris
You have bowled there once and complained about the lanes - no oil - You are entitled to your opinion
Maybe the correct terminolgy would be to say that you didnt know how to bowl or adapt to a condition that not exactly what you get at home or you struggle to bowl anywhere away from home.
I gather that you are talking about Emerson last year but I did not see the likes of Team Deano and Chucky struggling - Did you
Chucky is right without seeing all of the president shield teams Morwell has had a least one rep and in some cases multiple reps in either the boys or girls side for at least the last 20 years in a row.
Want to look at ave's
At the current moment there are 2 guys averaging over 200 in league and about 6 in the 190's - no 220's or 230's here
One of the guys on a 200+ ave also bowls at Ed Flemming with a 200+ ave and to give him credit when he first came to Morwell he really struggled with the conditions but by using his experience he has found a way to score at Morwell
Bowling at Morwell for the past 26 years I have seen alot - the funniest thing that I find and still see today is the bowler that comes down sprucing I have a 220 ave back home - good for you mate your not at home now, and then struggles to throw a 150 ave. If only these bowlers would let go of their EGO and actually think about finding a way to score instead of blaming the conditions bowling in general would be alot better off.
Personally I find Morwell challenging and rewarding and in some cases it can be frustrating but all in all it most probably gives you a true reflection of your bowling ability and metal toughness.

Best City Centre : ED Fleming, possibly Moorabbin

Best Country Centre : Warrnambool, then Geelong

Will not comment on my last visit to Morwell, :( , no issues with the centre at all, but l have to say that l have always enjoyed visiting the bowls that have those tough conditions. Sometimes will bowl great, others just plain old s*** (like may last visit to morwell  ). Must agree with Chucky and Woza about Morwell producing great junior bowlers over the years. Can always remember not only the numbers that made Pres Shield over the years, but the number that tried out each year as well. I think from memory '94 had half of the entire team came from Morwell.

My choice for best city centre, some might say as biased, but as l have bolwed league in over 10 differant centres in my 22 years of bowling, l can say that l have enjoyed my time the most at Ed Fleming, and the scores have nothing to do with if l enjoy my bowling or not in league.

Country Centre for Warnambool, is my all time favorite. The staff and the locals are able remember you, even though you only visit once a year for Warnambool Cup (the best Singles Victorian Tournament :D ). The place is small, but has that great feel about it, the conditions can really be something strange at times, but challenging as well. I may be alittle swayed as the weekend for Warnambool Cup is just so great in general, as all you anyone really wants to do is party, and the bowling is second to all else. Geelong has to get a mention, as the centre is well presented, spacious, and just about everything seems to run to plan, when you bowl there.

We may not have the best( Knox) it may be close to the worst all i can say is it my mate's fault  not mine i have one word to say

RESURRECTION [-X

I have to give Werribee a mention as one of the best centres in Victoria.
As for one of the toughest High point would have to be up there, although they are getting much better lately

I LOVE WERRIBEE! THE STAFF ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR NAME!! AND ALL THE BOWLERS ARE GREAT, FULL OF HELPFULL TIPS. THE FOODS GREAT TOO ;)

THE WORST ARE THOES BOWLING CENTRES DESIGNED FOR DRUNK BOWLERS!! DOWN AT THE CROWN YOU CAN LITERALLY BOWL AND DRINK AT THE SAME TIME. I BELIVE THERE IS A PLACE IN CHAPEL THAT DO THE SAME THING!
YUK! THEY CONFESCATE YUR SHOES, THE LANES ARE NARROW AND ITS DANGEROUS!! I FEEL SORRY FOR CLAUSTROPHOBICS IN THAT PLACE!
(YES I WENT THERE ONCE before I STARTED BOWLING LEAUGE)

BUT I GUESS YOU GUYS WERE TALKING ABOUT real BOWLING CENTERS RIGHT???

Ease up on the caps, maybe the canary yellow too ;)

@Woza's post. Exactly the same at Melton. Its tough to score, but its possible. I love the situation you are referring to though. Had a similar situation last year, couple of Werribee bowlers came down with their 215 averages and averaged 160. You could almost read the look on their faces..."What? I actually have to think about what I'm doing here? too tough!"

Meanwhile the Melton team were averaging about the 200 mark, knowing what adjustments to actually make. See, thats the difference for a lot of people, learning their bowling in a tough centre prepares them for many outcomes, not given a 7 board area to play in.

best centre

what no-one can still match Northcote..........we need 10 reasons....................

Warnambool, Melton(sorry guys, wish i could have stayed) and Ed Fleming are pretty cool, Essendon is frightful and i wish i was watching on as Ringworm uh... wood was getting torn to bits, Good to see Moorabbin on the way back up too, in late 90's up till 2000 that was the best centre in the state.

What Up
i have bowled at morwell twice but ur right i just struggled and i would like to say werribee is at the top of my list with forest hill and ed fleming and they are polite and remember ur name

PS i'm sorry for openeing this forum if it is abusing any centers i'm just i wanna know what people think of other centers in victoria

Castle

Anyone that says Morwell is the worst centre is simply saying that because they arent a ditch. You actually have to think for yourself and adjust! Why do u think we produce such a strong team every year? We are always up with the best in tournys. Tell me your centre is Chris????

Im not havin a go at anyone but y winge about the lanes when u have only bowled there once? Learn to think and u may become a great bowler!!!!

Debra

(p.s I bowl there and can bowl perfectly fine when im healthy, So i dont understand the complaints)
