TBAQ Chairman Michael McKenna has today announced the highly anticipated line-up of 12 young bowlers selected to travel to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in late November to compete in the 2016 Milo International All-Stars Championship.
The selection of the team is the culmination of the 2016 SCOOT Youth & Junior Talent ID Pathway series of nine events held at various bowling centres in North, Central and South Queensland. The Talent ID Pathway is recognised as the highlight of TBAQ’s development initiatives for bowlers up to 21 years of age, with award-winning airline, SCOOT providing valuable support with return flights to Singapore and additional baggage allowances for bowling equipment for all squad members.
The squad will comprise an even number of boys and girls – eight Junior and four Youth bowlers - from North and South Queensland and was selected from a pool of some of the State’s most skilled young athletes.
“We have still missed a lot of talented bowlers but unfortunately just cannot fit more into the squad this time … the Committee could have picked a dozen in each of the age groups as Queensland has an enormous amount of talent but we’ve aimed at providing the opportunity for international competition to as wide a range of age-groups as possible,” TBAQ CEO Gail Torrens explained.
The Milo All-Stars Championship organisers expect almost 700 players will participate in the tournament this year, with entries from more than a dozen countries already confirmed.
“We’re confident that the experience gained from this high calibre international competition will be invaluable to our young bowlers and plans are already underway to extend the Talent ID Series into 2017 and beyond,” Torrens continued. “We anticipate an expanded program of 11 events next year, and those players selected this year will not be eligible for 2017 so many of the young bowlers who just missed selection this year will definitely be in contention for the 2017 squad,” she added.
Two officials will accompany the squad of 12 bowlers, details as follows:-
14 years & under: Bailey Miller from Cairns and Cameron Stein from Toowoomba
16 years & under: Tyler Judson from Robina and Mikayla Cahill from Cairns
18 years & under: Chloe Wilson from Townsville, Makayla Tritton from North Lakes, Kylie Bailey from Edens Landing and Matthew Clague from Arundel on the Gold Coast
21 years & under: Matthew Dickson from Gordonvale, Blayne Fletcher from North Lakes, Maddy Kemp from Murrumba Downs and Shona Black from Robina
Officials: Gail Torrens and Jeff Kemp
