Site shutdown

Jan,
Thank you for all the hard work you've done. It's a shame that the Australian Tenpin Organisations/Associations can't be bothered helping you put together a compendium of all-time records. However, it doesn't surprise me one bit. I've found them to be pretty useless in the past.
Whatever you do..please don't get rid of your records section. I'm sure you're not the only one who cares about our Sport's history.

What a huge shame!
Jan I would like to say I loved your site, it was interesting and informative and I know alot of people that agree.
Thanks for the time and effort you put in to do it in the first place its just a shame others couldn't help... it doesn't take much effort to send an email does it?

Jessika

Jan,

This is certainly very sad news.

I'd like pass on a huge thank you to you in the assistance that you have given me in establishing the Vic State Championship records.

I know what sort of time and effort goes into creating these records (I'm going through a similar exercise myself).

Your site contains so much information that it must have taken an eternity.

It is a great pity... and I am with Jess. Surely it's not that hard to just to email with some information??

It was a great site, thanks for the effort you put into it Jan.

I'm with all the others on here - its a very great shame that you have decided to pull the pin on your very informative website.
As you know I gave you a lot of info on the tournaments at Moonah and quite a few Shield & Rachuig teams - it took me ages to scour around the big old house of mine to come across most of this stuff from about 1970 onwards.
I'd certainly appreciate it if you could send me all the information you have on Tasmania to my email address so I can add it all to my data base here which I'm collecting.
The record keeping here in Tasmania has been absolutely atrocious over the years and it has been good to get all this (sort of) back together in one place.......well done to those who got off thier arse and did something about it.
One final note Jan.......you made a comment to me about Australian records allegedly being stored in "a certain person's garage" and your doubts thereof - I officially found out that they went to the tip some years ago - By one of the people who helped dispose of those records - ON THE TIP.
Any sport worth it salt will honour its history - perhaps thats why Bowling isn't seen a "Sport"
P.S: K-C, if/when Jan emails all the info to me I will then email you with it so you can add to the book you have there, I also have other info for you as well that you can add.

ATB site

Thanks for the emails etc.
A few questions have been asked both on this forum and by email so i will answer as best i can.
First of to those that have requested records etc these will be passed on as soon as i can. The entire site has been cut onto CD except for photos etc which will be saved on a separate cd.
Why did it fail?? several resons i think, one i am not known by many of the people i sought information from and perhaps in their eyes i had no creditbility, the site had no backing from an official organisation and yes i mean TBA. And while i thank you Peter for your comments i doubt that they are shared in the TBA heirachy, in fact the reaction from them re the site going i expect would have been a round of hi 5's.
And while there are a few perhaps interested in records from the past the majority could not care less.I had planned to add to each tournament page with reports on stepladders, photos etc to try to make it a bit more interesting but could not get enough info to make it worthwhile.
There were over 200 pages on the site and thousands of indivual records, many came from my private collection which i have amassed since the early 80's. BTW these will not be going to the tip.
No i will not be naming who i asked for info, they have their reasons, and perhaps like most bowlers they are modest and unassuming and do not wish to see their achievments online. (tongue firmly in cheek).
Someone suggested i just leave the site up but there is nothing worse than an out of date web site that has not been updated since the year dot.
And yes i am upset, and yes i am angry, frustrated etc and yes perhaps it was a knee jerk reaction to being called a F*** Wit by some moron who used a dodgy email, mate you have little to do, more than anything though i am just plain dissapointed. There is a lot of info out there even if it is not in written form but in peoples memories, if it is not collected it will be gone for ever sooner than we think. And while you might not be interested in anybody knowing you won the Upper Fumbucker Cup in 1985 your kids, grand kids or those Juniors you coach now or in the future might be.
Simple little requests like Dear A***** can you confirm what that you won the something tournament in this particular year have been ignored.
It is not that hard to hit the reply button and say yes or no it was this year.
Instead it must have been easier to hit the get stuffed button.
To AMF and others who did at least have a link to the site thanks.
And now i have had my vent I am off to bed.
Goodnight.

Confucious say one should not drink and then post on forum but what the heck.

Hi Jan,
Good to see all the class exuding from our sport - Not
Your efforts were appreciated anyway - Thankyou :)

I'm sorry to hear about you shutting down the site Jan, I know you have been putting a lot of effort into the site.

However, the site like many should remain up, the information was originally put there because you wanted to contribute a website to bowlers seeking information and history, well you have done that. The fact it is not complete is frustrating, but frustrating to you alone, information in any form is difficult to get, most bowlers are happy to have some information given to them, it is better than nothing, but it is simply history and it needs to be recorded, and slowly if it must.

As you know in 1987, we tried to put together a book of the history of bowling in Australia, we knew it was not going to be complete because there are so many other groups around that were not part of the ATBC at the time. We gathered the people we believed to be the best and most knowledgeable, they had all this stuff in their heads because they were there and remembered it all. We had them write the book for us, because like yourself no-one knew who we were. The information regarding records took many people a few months to put together, and they were part of the ATBC at the time, the records were in draws, cabinets and boxes and at peoples homes, but eventually we got most of them, and we were very proud of what we achieved.

We spent around $50,000 to produce 6000 books for a bowling population of over 200,000, membership of ATBC at the time was over 120,000. We were prepared to do a second print, because of the popularity of such a book.

Anyway we invited people to our book launch, including the best bowlers and newspaper people, and bowling industry notables, we invited TV but they did not come, we had some drinks and nibbles, did some speeches, and after all that we got a little publicity in the print media, nothing on TV and some exposure in the bowling magazines of the time.

After all that, we still had to sell all these books, otherwise our business was in trouble. We got in touch with AMF who graciously took a 1000 books off our hands, they distributed them to all there centres in Australia, each centre had 20 odd books each to sell to more than 1000 bowlers in their centre, we got in touch with every other centre in the country and sent them posters and letters telling them about the book, we even sent some free books to peruse, we did not get a great response. we were then stuck with many books as you can imagine. We believed that it was an easy task, how wrong could we have been.

As you know we also have a proshop, and through that proshop we sold more than 3000 books individually over the next 10 years, we still sell them today, and the book remains the only one ever written on bowling in Australia.

Most bowlers out there are glad to share their achievements, some are even glad to share their failures, some simply can't remember what happened that far back. If it was the 60' or 70's I can understand they just can't remember, it takes time to squeeze this information out of people, you just need to keep chipping away.

Regarding websites that are not up to date, most websites are electronic business cards for people sharing information around the web, your's is that as well as mine is that. I spend 10 hours a week on my site updating prices, images, text and generally making it better, I'm sure you do similar if not more on your's, it is something we choose to do.

Keep up the good work.

Regards,
Patrick Birtig

Hello Patrick

Well as usual Patrick you put things into perspective, we will have to start calling you the wise old owl. Sorry about the old but i mean it in bowling years.
I remember well the struggle with your book and still can't believe it went the way that it did. I lost my original copy in a flood and you replaced it for me. It has been invaluable, and it together with the stuff i had make up much of the content.
I still sometimes get people asking about it after they see the name in the sources, many did not know of its existance, and if this applies to you, you can still get it at Bowlers World at Mooralbark I believe.
If i have offended any one with my post last night, sorry, i have a short fuse and tend to lead with my mouth instead of my brain sometimes. BUT I stand by most of what i said last night except perhaps the bit about the TBA hi 5's.
I will take a step back and have a bit of a think about things, most likely as usual bit of more than i can chew and tried to do too much too quick.
Jan

That's the spirit old girl, whoops sorry, I meant you wonderful woman you.

We all get down on ourselves sometimes, and everyone need's someone to lift their spirits up, if I can do that, then that's great. We all look at things one way while others look things other ways, is the glass half full or half empty. I have always been an optimist, I would not have Bowlers World still going after 15 years if I wasn't, people told me I was wrong in opening it, it would not work and I would not survive, well I did, and look at what a difference I made.

Jan, you make a difference, you created a website that made you happy, and because of that people now know who you are not everyone does, but heh this is a big country and some people don't have computers. Your forte is that you have a passion for history, and a passion for collecting information from people who are happy to share, and dragging information out of people who need to have 20000 volts to make tham wake up each morning.

We all have our place in this community called bowling, and that's what makes it go round, think of how bowling would be without the major players involved now or in the past, and that includes the change from ATBC to TBAL. What would bowling be like if we never had an AMF in Australia, Bob Cook and Pin Action, if Ed Fleming or Steve Mackie did not exist, the list goes on.

Cheer up and get back to what you enjoy doing the most, communicating with people. It's got to put a smile on your face sometimes.

P.S How is the other half going, LoL.

Regards,
Patrick Birtig
