Riding The Belmonte Express
Could a bowling wonder from Down Under be our sport’s answer to Tiger Woods?
Nobody can precisely define what “the next level” would be for the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour. What we can say is that it’s a place where there’s more respect for the PBA’s players as athletes, more mainstream media coverage, and a lot more prize money. There’s no question that everyone involved with the Professional Bowlers Assn. — its owners, administrators, players and fans — would like to get there.
Jason Belmonte, he of the unusual bowling style and magnetic personality, is perceived by many as the express elevator to that next level. And now that Belmo is a bona fi de PBA champion, perhaps those mutterings of “all hype” will fade away, and a new era of high visibility and prosperity for professional could be ushered in.
A pipe dream? Maybe. But in a sport sorely lacking in demographically friendly twentysomethings, the 25- year-old Belmonte gives the PBA a thoroughbred in the sports marketing derby that it could ride for a very long time. To put it bluntly, bowling is banking on Belmo. “They talk about the power TV ratings of golf,” USBC Vice President of Media Pete Tredwell told the Boston Globe. “Could Jason Belmonte potentially do that for bowling in America? It’s possible.”
