Over the weekend of the 4th and 5th October, the Queensland North team had their last training camp at Kirwan before the start of the Nationals.
Being so close to the start of the Nationals I thought people would be interested in what the lanes are like, and what to expect when you get up here.
First off the weather has been really hot of late, although morning and evenings there has been a nice breeze to cool things down. But when I say hot I mean that you can be outside doing nothing and still raise a sweat.
Now to the lanes. Our team found them to be really quite good, there was a shot for the swingers, crankers, spinners and strokers
(Of which our team has all of the above).
There is a fairly consistent shot from 5 to 20 board, with a good rate of carry at the backends. Sparing is easy because the lanes are playing so consistent, and the only excuse for missing will be the person who let the ball go. I really hope this condition stays as it gives everyone a really good chance to find a line that works and bowl some really good scores.
What better promotion for our sport than seeing some of the cream of the countries bowlers shooting big numbers and going hammer and tong at each other, on lanes where the deciding factor is pure skill and determination rather than the fact that one team had strokers/swingers/lefties etc. I have been very critical of these lanes in the past, but it would appear that a lot of work has been done to rectify things and this is a very positive sign indeed.
Lastly let me tell you that the Queensland North shirts look really excellent, and if you are keen for a swap then let me know as I reckon once people see them they will go really quickly.
Looking forward to seeing you all in 4 weeks.
Cheers
Steve Hunt
PS If you do nothing else while in Townsville go to the Brewery, they have the best selection of ice cold locally brewed beers as well as really good food.
