Due to the lack of nominations received so far the committee has decided to extend the closing date till Friday 2nd May.

Hey,

Stupid question, probably.

But would Juniors who are in their last year of juniors (aka me) be allowed to roll off?

Actually never mind, found out i can't go to adult nats this year even if i was allowed, it coincides with my end of year uni exams

It's an interesting day for this sport when Team NSW can't get a team together for the premier elite event of the year.

has anyone ever bothered to think - "and the reason we can't get nominations is....."

lets see now, archaic team management structure, increasingly high costs, lack of flexibility, rising interest rates, rising fuel costs, lack of suitable accommodation due to Floriade.

can anyone else add to these as a starter.

...lack of suitable accommodation due to Floriade...
Gawd, I hadn't thought of Floriade. Hayfever sufferers may want to skip this year :p

Possibly the fact that there's only one place of accommodation within coooeee... Makes costs seem higher too.

Yeah there are some worthwhile discussion points there. I was absolutely mad keen to give it a go this year. I had my form filled in ready to send and had made some phone calls to find out a little more information. However, after sitting down over the weekend and crunching the numbers, it's an expense that I can't justify this year, and I'm sure there are a lot of other people who will say exactly the same thing.

I'm extremely disappointed that I can't roll off, as I think Rachuig would be a fantastic experience, but the fact that I am required to be there for 8 days just makes it too much for me this year.

Having never attended the nationals and being fairly new to tournament bowling, my question is, with Rachuig being Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, why is there a requirement to be there for 8 days? I am not intending to be critical by asking this question, but perhaps it's something that could be looked at in the future to try and make it more affordable.

I rolled off last year, was even lucky enough to make the team. But due to a leaking roof that needed replacing the money needed to be spent in other areas and I removed myself from the team.

I was planning to roll off again this year but for other reasons again the financial commitment is too much.

I think the biggest part of the problem for most people is a combination of both the money needed and the time off work. I feel the state committees should be doing more to try and find sponsors of our teams or arranging local fund raising events to help offset the cost of being involved in such a great event, making it a more realistic option for people. Even if the cost was only subsidised a small amount it all helps.

That said I'm sure it wouldn't be an easy task, but in the team or not I would attend an event to help raise money for NSW to go and bring home the gold again.....

Just my 2 cents (if what I have said doesn't make sense I blame the fact I'm working nights this week and nothing makes sense to me right now).

Minimum attendance:
Into Accommodation 19
All events start early 20
Rachuig 21/22/23
Aust Championships 24/25
Dinner presentation night 25
That's a minimum of 7 nights accommodation needed.

The encouragement and promotion of adult championships and tournaments in NSW would encourage more individuals wanting to participate.

Hi Leanne
.
Compulsory stay for team members of Rachuig is 4 nights. It is not compulsory for team members to bowl Masters or go to the presentation although it is compulsory for the state to pay for the dinner tickets.
.
Graham - Accommodation in Canberra is plentiful. I suspect that the states have already booked their rachuig accommodation and when I was in Canberra 3 weeks ago there was plenty of apartments left 100 yards from the bowl.
.
If NSW are looking at having a shortage in females to bowl Rachuig I am more that happy to put my hand up for the state. I may even be able to find some more senior ladies who would be interested.

This is ridiculous. The venue is Canberra not Perth. Bowlers in NSW that would love a chance to represent their state get your nomination in asap. The expense will not be as high as it would if the venue was WA or SA. If you can afford the trip, sign up now.

The experience is great and I recommend it to everyone.

Christian

Totally agree with you but the fact is that its still going to be at least 1000 for the week if not more. Most people cant afford that plus its a week off work

That is why I said If you can afford it to give it a go. I know most people cannot afford it, but there is some people out there that can afford it but choose not too trial because of other reasons. They are the bowlers I was directing my post at.

PS: Congrats on the AO win Matt.

well i think they should bowl too

Thanks for the congrates

I never tried out because I could never justify the cost, but this year being in ACT i have family there so I don't have to pay for a week accommodation. Now I know the flower shows on in, but selectors and managers need shop around for accommodation, I know the country comfort is the preferred option as it is close the bowl, but if look at place in queanbeyan they are cheaper and only 20 mins away, I stay out there for summernats and its great, plenty of place to eat and easy access to everywhere.

Susanne - i agree accommodation is plentiful, but at a price. i spent a couple of weeks searching for suitable accommodation for our travel group and frankly it was bloody expensive. but through a friend in ACT who works at a motel we were able to find the number of rooms we were after at a good rate.

to date the posts seem to centre around costs, but let me look at it this way. end of september is 5 months away for $1000 cost thats $200 per month or $50 per week. budget and put it away or why not approach the state tournament committee and discuss a pay off plan, get the account number and transfer funds regularly.

i understand fully increasing costs of living, fuel, interest rates etc. for me to travel to any tournament its a minimum 4 hours in the car plus its nearly always pay to stay. but i do think that the idea of staying as a team together where state committee choose is ridiculous when bowlers can source accommodation with relatives, like Storm King can in this instance, or friends or even at a cheaper rate elsewhere. why is it that the restricted challenge team has to advise team managers of their accommodation place, ETA etc yet Rachuig have to stay together. come off it, these people are adults too. whats good for one team should be good for every team or is it that archaic practises of yester year still seem to be the flavour of the month

David,

If you make the team, you do have to stay with the team on the Rachuig nights and therefore still have to pay for the accommodation like the rest of us.

which is totally a wrong and outdated idea.

who knows how many others have designs to nominate and have accommodation with family and friends available to them in ACT and HAVE TO stay where they are told and pay to do so.

yester years rules need to be thrown out and new more up to date rules used.

Shoey,

I disagree here. Look at all other team representative sports, they stay as a team not all seperated staying with family or friends. Your representing your state I believe you need to stay as a team.

People that have not played Rachuig and stayed with their respective teams would not understand.

Do you think it's right for the Australian Team to travel to the USA to play FIQ and have Belmo and Walshy stay with friends and the rest of the team stay at the hotel accommodation. I don't think so. That is not what you call a team.
