The 2007 Queensland Ladies Classic is over for another year - it will be hard for the 10th Classic in 2008 to surpass the excellence of the bowling and competitive attitudes of the class field this year. Kate Wilton dominated from the first game and after 16 games of qualifying led the field by 186 pins with an average of 237.6 from the ever tough, Ann-Maree Putney on 226.0 average. Faye Bottomley made up the top 3 placings with her excellent 222.0 and Alicia Meads (209.0) finished 22 pins ahead of Sue Cassell to make the Top 15 Matchplay segment.
Kate, Cheryl Langlands, Cassie Staudinger and Kara Triulcio all had 279 games in qualifying. Bianca Flanagan - 278 and Marnie Britton - 276 in qualifying and Amanda Frost with her 290 game in Matchplay excelled with their scores. Amanda averaged 244.4 to be the high average for the finals.
Kate continued through the Matchplay, averaging 239.9 with 5 wins, 1 tie and 1 loss which was the highlight match of the finals - Bec Simpson 300, Amanda Frost 290 and Kate’s 269 merited a zero bonus in Match 3!! What an adrenalin rush for the bowlers and spectators as the girls ‘strutted their stuff’.
Match 1 of the Matchplay also featured Jacinta Gilliland - 265 ... Kara Triulcio - 254 and Cheryl Langlands - 229 and certainly set the standard with Match 4 starring Ann-Maree Putney - 246, Bianca Flanagan - 246 and Jayde Flanagan needing to strike for 256 and the win bonus. Needless to say, Ann-Maree and Bianca were encouraging Jayde to bowl a gutter ball and have a 3 way tie ... not to be !!!
Promising also to see some young bowlers competing well and if the crowd participation is any indicator of their interest in womens’ bowling as a spectator sport, it augurs well for the future of the Queensland Ladies Classic.
Congratulations! to Kate Wilton for her most impressive win - to Bec Simpson for her 300 game and to all the bowlers who competed with enthusiasm.
