Qualischefski makes it 3 Sun City opens in a row
Day one of qualifying saw an outstanding performance from local bowler Stephen Hunt in the 2006 Sun City Classic. Bowling in A squad Hunt set a blistering pace, rolling 11 out of a possible 12 200+ games, qualifying with a +390 pin fall over his 12 games and a first day Average of 232.5
B squad saw defending champion Brandon Qualischefski set out after the local favorite Hunt. A slow start to defending his title was soon rectified with games of 268, 274,217, 269, and 231, in a string of 9 200+ games averaging 224.5 on his way to eventually qualify in second position for the match play on the second day. Top 16 men was rounded out by Paul Tindall at 55 under for his 12 games. Last cash spot in the men’s went to Brendan Muscat.
After the three squads of qualifying for the ladies division, Louise Cavanagh won the ladies division with an average of 208.3, a 12 game total of 2500, second place in the ladies went to Brenda Carr averaging 201.58 for her 12 games and third was Kate Wilton with an average of 190.17, forth place and last cash position for the ladies was Leesa Bartlem with an average of 186.42.
Day two once again had local boy Hunt fly to an early lead starting with a second game perfecto shooting a 300, and winning four of his first five matches. Qualischefski had other things in mind in defense of his title and trying to win this event for the third time in a row. Qualischefski set out by winning six of his first nine matches and soon had all the answers and the lead and was never headed for the title once in front. In game eight Qualischefski also answered Hunts 300 with one of his own, which then indeed set him up for the lead he was after! Averaging a very healthy 229.8 for his 15 games of match play and winning nine games along the way gave him his third Sun City open title in a row.
Stephen Hunt was second once again averaging 223.6 for his fifteen games and showing why he is becoming one of Queensland’s most consistent players. Another Townsville local Rob Buckley rounded off the top three with a nice 219.33 average for his fifteen games. Paul Chambers of Brisbane averaging 192.53 finished sixteenth in his first appearance in Townsville.
Well done to Judy Hunt and her team of helpers for a very well run and organised tournament in the North…Their hospitality up there is second to none and hope to be back there again in 2007.
