Qiuck PAP question!

OK
If I bowl with a wrist guard or glove does my PAP change if I don't wear it?

I understand the angles are different then surely the PAP changes?

Yours attempting to understand the bowling science,

Jason

It can change your PAP, as it may put your hand in a different position...

When I wear mine, it doesn't change my PAP, but changes my tilt.

Very good question Jason!

In my experience, wearing a wrist guard will change your PAP, but only if it makes a radical difference to the way you throw the ball. For example, if I put a wrist guard on, it cuts down my rev rate substantially and straightens my track out. Even with the big change it makes, my PAP barely budges, although my track circumference increases. But the change is right there in the circumference, making the ball travel longer and break softer. (I can also achieve much the same result by laying off the release as much as possible and have worked so hard in this direction of late.) It varies from individual to individual though. Some folks get support from wrist devices. I get restraint.

This is also indicative of why pin to PAP layouts have always been necessary. A seemingly small change in PAP can make a big difference to track dimensions and appropriate layouts.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Jason

Jason, a larger circumference track (all else being equal) makes the ball hook earlier. The increase in length for you will probably be due to the reduced rev rate or a change in axis rotation.

Jason - simple experiment here - Bowl a few balls - check out where your track is. If you release consistently you will see the track in the same place each time. Now put your wrist guard on - Does the track change? If yes your PAP has changed. It is also about which ball? Whose hand is throwing the ball and what length of oil you are on at the moment. I think the simple track rule will give you the answer.

Best wishes

Gail

Thank you all

My track is (at a guess) changed closer to the finger grips by 1/8 to 1/16 inch!
Without the guard my ball is aimed at the 10 board and the ball goes to the pocket (I have literally no revs), with the guard I can throw at the 5 board out to the 2 board and straight back to the pocket (the guard is at full cup of the ball)!!!

To be honest I'm in the sticks and I really need a coach, I know of a gentlemen in Melb that's a lefty too, so I may have to see him.

Thanks again to you all
Jason

Gail, that is not necessarily true. It is very possible for the track circumference to decrease (more axis tilt) but the axis (and thus the pap) remain the same. In this case the first flare ring on each of the two tracks will be parallel to each other.
