Virgin Blue currently have a sale on that provide flights to Perth from Melbourne for $169 one way or $338 return (both one way).

They are available until about the 19th or until sold out so get on quick. They will also allow Perth bowlers to bowl in the Melbourne Cup although I being in Melbourne have not checked the availability for that weekend.

You can currently get a flight from Perth to Melbourne on the Monday at 6:45pm getting home at quarter past midnight which is better than the red eye.

I haven't looked into other states but you might want to check this out yourselves. Hope you find one suitable.
