Doug Kent became the first third-seed in history to win a USBC Masters as he won three matches Sunday to capture the 2006 USBC Masters at the Wisconsin Exposition Center.
Kent knocked off top-seed Jack Jurek in the title match, 277-230, to win his second career Masters title and his second Denny’s Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour Major title.
The Newark, N.Y., native was unstoppable in the title match, overcoming an early deficit by striking nine consecutive times after opening the match with two spares. The key in that stretch was a late break in the 6th frame when the headpin came across the deck and barely knocked over the 10-pin.
Kent earned a two-season Denny’s PBA Tour exemption with the win along with $100,000.
“It’s an honor to be in the company of so many great bowlers who have won this tournament, and it’s an honor to be in that category,” said Kent, who captured his eighth career Denny’s PBA Tour title. “The two-year exemption for me is big because I’ve kind of been in the middle of the pack the last couple years.”
Jurek, who had started the match with four consecutive strikes, let Kent back in with spares in the 5th and 6th frames. He bounced back with strikes in the 7th and 8th, but a 1-2-4-10 washout in the 10th all but ended the match.
Kent advanced to the title match with a 246-190 win over amateur George Lambert IV (Hamilton, Ontario), who was making his first appearance in a PBA championship round.
In the first match, fourth-seed Tommy Jones had a chance to beat Kent with a strike on his first shot in the 10th, but he left a 2-pin. The 2005-06 PBA Player of the Year then struck to tie Kent at 248 through 12 frames which sent the match to a one-ball, sudden-death roll-off. Kent, as the higher seed, elected to bowl first and rolled a nine count. Jones then left a 2-4-8-10 split giving Kent the 9-6 win.
Jurek (Lackawanna, N.Y.) earned $50,000 for his second place finish while Lambert earned $25,000 for third and Jones (Simpsonville, S.C.) won $15,000 for fourth.
The Denny’s PBA Tour moves to Taylor, Mich., for the 2006 Motor City Classic Nov. 1-5 at Taylor Lanes. The nationally televised ESPN finals take place Sunday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. EST.

- Despite not winning his first Major or securing a two-season exemption, Jurek was still pleased with his finish. "This is definitely the best week I've ever had," Jurek said.
- The $50,000 Jurek earned for second was his biggest career payday and nearly surpassed his earnings from all of last season. He made $65,270 last season in his first as an exempt bowler.
- Kent and Jurek are two of 10 exempt bowlers from New York state and five from the Western New York area. Jurek won a tournament at Kent's Rose Bowl Lanes recently.
