Noob question about articles

I've been reading a few web pages here and there that describe some techniques, and they often talk about where the fingers are when the ball is released in terms of points of a clock (eg 9 o'clock).

From which direction is the clock? As in, 9 o'clock looking at the ball from which direction? The back? The top?

If the articles are talking about finger position, then the thumb becomes the centre of the clock face, looking down your arm. So fingers at 6 o'clock would be with the fingers directly behind the ball, palm facing straight down the lane. 3 o'clock fingers would have the palm facing directly to the left, for a right hander. However, some people use the finger position, and some use the thumb position as a reference. In this case, the fingers are the centre of the clock face and the direction the thumb points is the 'o'clock'. for instance, 6 o'clock fingers = 12 o'clock thumb, 3 o'clock fingers = 9 o'clock thumb. Usually (hopefully) the article are clear about which they are referring to - eg 3 o'clock fingers, thumb at 10 o'clock, etc.

Also, most sites only refer to right handed positions. If you are left handed, you will have to 'mirror image' the clock face for the correct hand position.

Hope all that makes sense!
