a "touchy" topic, don't spose you will get too many responses, I think people are a little scared to put their heads on the line.
But here are my thoughts
1. The trial, if it remains in it's current format should be held over more than one tournament.
2. If the trial stays the same Why travel to Ranked tournaments? Ranked events must be a part of the trial if for nothing other than promoting attendance at events.
The trial could be the only tournament that you play in that year and you could make the team. (Hypothetical I know but could happend) OK, whilst this "MAY" mean you can play on the condition, you do not have tournament or matchplay experience so how would you go mentally when it's crunch time while you are wearing the Green and Gold?
3. Using the Ranking system is a great idea. Then there would be no questions asked, the selectors wouldn't need to take heat etc. If this were the case then a minimum standard must be enforced for lane conditions.
4. The selection criteria? What is it? Who knows about it? The players I have spoken to do not know what the criteria is, shouldn't this be delivered prior to the event. (a) let's the bowler know what they have to do (b) keeps the selectors accountable to their decisions
5. In the NTS book that all members received (I am not a member of NTS by the way!) said something toward the fact that the Ranking system would be highly regarded in the selection process.
This is clearly not the case in some of the selection decisions. So have the selectors got thier own agenda and the bowlers been mislead into believing that attending these ranked events over the past year was important and now they realise it was all in vain?
Lastly, too much emphasis is placed on one performance either the Trial if you make the top 2 / 3 or your performance at President Shield / Rachuig if you are hoping for selection, these seems to be the ones to shoot well at! Again, not a good message to attend Ranked events.
My thoughts for what they are worth. Thankfully I will never be at this standard to have to worry about being selected, however I do speak with those who are and feel their frustrations.
