6-2 Match Play Record Pushes Aussie to the Front
PITTSBURGH, PA – Australia’s Maxine Nable used a 6-2 match play record and a 219.80 average to propel herself back on top of the leader board at the $50,000 Three Rivers Open (Editor’s note – players earn 30 bonus pins for each match won during match play rounds). Nable, who led the tournament after round one holds a 61-pin margin over Liz Johnson, Cheektowaga, N.Y.
“I’ve had great luck her so far,” said Nable. “There still is a long way to go but I’m happy with the way I’ve been playing.”
Seeking her first title as a professional, Nable posted wins over three players in the tournament’s top ten including Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (235-195, 3rd), Johnson (254-212, 2nd) and fellow Australian, Cara Honeychurch (238-214, 8th). Currently her tournament average is 24 pins about her season mark (195).
“I don’t approach match play any differently than any other game,” stated Nable. “Every game I try to relax and throw good shots. Hopefully the rest takes care of itself.”
A winner of three titles this season, Johnson’s 5,834 pin fall and 218.61 average gives her a seven-pin advantage over the defending champion, Dorin-Ballard. Unlike Nable, Dorin-Ballard is attempting to win her seventh title of the 2001 season. A victory for the N. Richland Hills, Texas native would tie her with Patty Costello for the most titles in a single PWBA season.
Moving into fourth place, Kim Terrell, Daly City, Calif. was one of three players during the evening to earn a 7-1 record. Her 5,824 total is 17 pins ahead of Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, N.Y. who closed out the night with 5,807 and a 217.57 average.
With two match play rounds left, seven players are within 196 pins or less of breaking into the tournament’s top five. One of those competitors is Brenda Norman, who delighted the crowd on hand by rolling the tournament’s first 300 game.
The Open will continue at the Princess Lanes at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday with the last match play round starting at 6:30 p.m.
At the conclusion of match play, the top five finishers compete on Thursday (Oct. 18) at 7 p.m. for the championship rounds. ESPN2 will tape the championships and later broadcast them on Monday, October 22, at 8:00 p.m. (EST) and October 30 at 7:00 a.m. (EST).
