THE iconic Milton Bowl will close after 45 years following its sale this week for $6 million.
Ten pin bowlers were yesterday left reeling from the news that the popular centre at Frew St, Milton would close its doors for the last time on March 17.
The purchaser of the site remains unknown.
Mark Greer and Jon Crampton of CB Richard Ellis were involved in the sale. Mr Greer said the centre had been owned by the Daley family for many years and it had reached a critical point where either a lot of money needed to be spent on the facility or it needed to be sold.
Family spokesman Shane Daley confirmed the sale yesterday.
He said that at a personal level the family was disappointed to be leaving the centre, but from a business point of view it had to be done.
"It was more a case of there is a reasonable amount of money needs to be spent there to upgrade the equipment and building," he said.
Milton Bowl manager Silvio Greco said local bowlers were "shocked and stunned" by the sale.
Mr Greco said the centre would offer free games on its last day.
