I've got Asian ranking points, if you attend an ABF event, they aren't too difficult to obtain, especially if you bowl well. For the common bowler in this country aspiring to make their first National team, bowling an ABF event and chasing points isn't an option.
There are numerous flaws in this new policy by TBA, he are MY views
1. The camp is in 2 weeks!!! Malaysia picked their training squad for this event 2 years ago, they have been training as a team for several months, along with most Asian countries. Why do we always leave it to the last minute?
How about the people who work for a living? With 2 weeks notice we have to book flights (not so cheap within a 2 week time frame), find accommodation and then if we are lucky have to apply for leave if we make the team.
2. History has proven CAMPS don't work. Putting people into a team who scrap in through a 'points' system is not how you pick a team. Attending World Champs is not a new thing, along with the 2 disciplines of patterns we bowl on (short and long) we know what to expect. There is no need to re-invent the wheel, we have the bowlers who we already KNOW will bowl well, running a camp is expensive and pointless. ** There are much more constructive ways on creating a talent pool for future International competition. Bowling is not like other sports, we have tried camps, they haven't worked.
3. If we do choose to leave selection to the last minute why not go on CURRENT form? Sounds too obvious to me. Some bowlers who bowled great last year will have a points advantage over bowlers who are currently bowling great right NOW! Who cares if you bowled well in the 2007 AO? How about the AO that was just on a few months ago? or the other events that have been on THIS year?
4. The cost is almost $4000, a cost could have been greatly reduced with some flights and hotel rooms booked several months ago whilst they were on special, along with everything else, the longer you leave it, the more it costs. This trip could have cost under 2K if planned even 4 months ago. All members have to folk out $3000 to $4000 in 6 weeks, good luck! (my recent holiday to the greek islands, italy and france was way under this figure, join the dots)
In summary, its all bad news if you ask me. I truly hope this isn't a sign of things to come for Australian bowling.
Good luck to all rolling off for the 2008 Mens Team, as you can guess from this post, I won't be there. I taken the liberty of carding myself now :cardY::cardY:
