IS TENPIN BOWLING GOOD FOR YOU.

Can anybody tell me if bowling has any physial benefits for social league bowlers? Ten Pin Bowling is a sun safe sport and matches the ideals of Sun Safety Policies established by the Queensland Cancer Foundation but surely there must be more.

Physical benefits for a Social Bowler? No, not really. Its not a very full on sport, one that requires high level on concentration, something not found in many social bowlers. Maybe if you bowled 10 games everyday and rode everything then you might get a slight benefit, probably that similair to a 1 or 2 hour walk.
Its all about the intensity, and as far as physical benefits go, bowling just isnt intense enough to create a major benefit for the 3-games-a-week social bowler, at least it decreases their chances of skin cancer...

this may be not a physical benefit, but compared to playing football socially, etc, tenpin bowling is a safe and non contact sport ... until they step over the foul line and land on their rear :)

is it bad for you in anyway? Like i you play to much when your younger could it icrease arthritis or something?

:D COSHEA :D

I bowl at least 35 -40 games a week & my arms are pretty long - I've just noticed this because I had to get a school blazer made for me - & apparently my arms are extremely long - according to my science teacher - abnormal. Maybe if you bowl too much (can there be such a thing?????) your arms will eventually reach the ground like an ape?? ??That is apart from having one arm MUCH stronger & muscular than the other (I sometimes bowl with my left hand to try to even things up). There are also the chiropractic problems that anyone involved in the higher levels of the sport will know about - but not a problem for social bowlers - only us fanatics!!

lol, I dont think bowling is stretching your arms, unless one is alot longer than the other, How/Why do you bowl 40 games a week? are you part of like 15 leagues or something?

:D COSHEA :D

 Yeh - one is a bit longa than the otha - but I bowl with both hands remember!! i bowl a five game league & 2 x4 game leagues - 4 games in coaching( after instructomat for at least an hour) and at least 3 practice games a day(every day) . Then there are tournaments on many weekends and coaching weekends occassionally.

Try walking to your local bowling centre with your two 16 pound bowling balls, that might have some physical bennifits in the long run.

I cant see bowling having any benfite, as anyone will tell you that is involved with athletes etc, Coaches and Personal trainers will all say you need to change your program every 3months, otherwise your body and muscles become used to the exercise, and cant develop anymore, unless your work load increases and ur body has to work harder, so maybe if you bowled 3 games a day everyday...then increased it to 6 a day then maybe you would benefit from it, but its not an intensive work out, so i doubt u would benefit from it very much, as i got told once bowling is 90% mental........10% physical

Try walking into your centre at 3am, clean the entire place after a night of drunken open play bowlers have scattered food and drink on every lane, bread crumbs, chewing gum, salt, sugar, and other niceities on the carpets, then stuffed lots of toilet rolls down the toilets (and locked all the cubicles from the inside, so that you have to climb under them  ), then the kiddies have a chip throwing contest in the creche........

Then bowl an 11-game tournament straight after you've finished doing that :-s

Now THAT will keep you fit. I eat like a horse, yet still only weigh 65kgs. :)

I used to bowl a max of 49 games a week...7 a day every day and that was just practise...(add another 4 and that counts league) It then went to about 35-42 a week (started to work part-time), then when the new centre opened it was roughly the same 30 + a week....but then I got injured (too much bowling apparently, but I told my physio theres no such thing...) and now only bowl 4 games to practise once a week, one 3 game league and occasionally bowl 3 games on Friday to train. So that injury I recieved is a con to ya health coz its gunna be with me 4 ever, but i find the strength in my arm is quite good, and I have a strong grip with my right hand...

Bowling is not that safe a sport.

1. My bro has had his fingernail ripped of by a ball

2. I tore some soft tissue in my wrist

3. and depends on how much u bowl u can hurt ur elbow

If youir na bowl-a-holic(like me), u may get an injury, but your safe if you don't overbowl too much. You can get fit if u bowl a lot as well coz believe it or not, when u bowl 2 or 3 game u walk a couple of kilometres.
Cya!
:p

Whenever I'm recruiting a junior into league I advise them of the benefits in hand/eye coordination. Its a sport of stamina in which you must be consistent in your scoring. Not all of us are built for basketball, football or swimming but there are many that the sport of bowling would suit.
On a social level its probably one of the most popular sports for being able to socialise with your competitors, thus promoting good sportsmanship. It caters for young and old and for those with special needs. I could go on and on but I would have to say 'YES' tenpin bowling is good for you.

Not true buddy. Bowling one shot is a 2-4 second attempt. You then rest for 1-2 minutes and bowl again. It take your body only 2 minutes to recover from running flat out for 10 seconds. You are not pushing your body to any limit, and thus not requiring the body to make itself better to improve in order to perform at the level that it is required. So the fact that you cover a couple of kms while bowling is not important if you dont make your body continue to work. Walking straight for 5 kilometres would be useful as you would use up all your primary energy systems, or anaerobic systems, and start using your aerobic system. Once you start to use these your body repairs itself slighty better to improve itself the next time round. However, you still have to walking at a pace, or intensity, fast enough to use cause enough damage to your body to make it repair itself. If you walk for 10 seconds, stop for 2 mins and repeat, you'd gain very little, if any, physical benefits. So how can walking 4-5 steps, and then resting for 2 mins be any good for you? Granted a decent level of aerobic fitness is required for the guys bowling 15 games of matchplay with 2 bowlers to a pair. It's actual benefits for 3 games a week in teams of 4 league bowlers simply aren't there. Even for bowl-a-holics, bowling would need to be done at a fast pace to be worthwhile, and you won't improve your game if your trying to improve your fitness. If you wanna get fit to improve your bowling, go for runs, cycle or swim. Bowl for the challenge and enjoyment of the game, or should I say Sport, not for its physical benefits.

Hey, da cowman

Do you only walk up to the foul line? (re: 4-5 steps)

I've only started back into league bowling after 14 odd years (had kids and stuff) and can say after 5 weeks I've gained muscle - (especially when I'm rolling it wrong!!), aerobic fitness (not puffing as much...) and lost a bit of unwanted weight. I've also strained my left knee and right ring finger, but having fun all the same. (I play 3 games in a doubles league and barely get time to plant it - if at all - before I'm up again!!)

Things have changed heaps since I last bowled, (reactive balls, mulitples of 300's, etc, etc) but I'd say for now I'm gaining great benefits from the sport - physically, mentally and socially - I even won Bowler of the Month on Saturday... and beat the boys by about 100 pins!! he he! (helps to have a low average...) I reckon, move it or lose it - and we're all moving it when we bowl!!
