Gas BBQ's

Hey

How much does an empty gas bottle weigh? Not sure of the capacity but it's one that would cost around $40 in Mitre 10 or Bunnings.

I ask as I've got one that's partially full but I've no idea how much is still in it.

Thanks.

Open the valve slightly...Turn the bottle on its side...

1 if a white gas comes out when the bottle is horizontal then its HALF FULL
2 If a white gas comes out when the bottle is only about a 1/4 of the way towards the horizontal position then its 3/4 full
3If a white gas comes out when the bottle is only about a 1/4 of the way past the horizontal position then its 1/4 full
4 If your turn the bottle nearly upside down before a white gas escapes then its very near empty.

Hope that helps

Don't know about that

As the bottle is under pressure a white gas will come out at any angle the bottle is on as long as it has gas in it.
The gas in a BBQ Bottle is a form of LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas ) and is a liquid form until it hits atmospheric temp and it turns to it gas form. (Hence the liquid in a cigarette lighter).
There is no perfect way to tell how much is in a bottle but for a general idea, just pour a cup of warm/hot water on the side of the cylinder and because LPG is so cold, a condensation line forms and you will be able to clearly see the level of liquid.

BTW I see kids and adults alike trying to light cigarettes with a lighter in cold weather by shaking the lighter as this may work eventually the initial problem is the atmospheric Temp is to cold to convert the liquefied gas into its gas form.
A quicker way is to warm the lighter somehow
IE Holding the lighter in your hand tight and allowing body heat to warm it up.
or maybe wrapping it up In a handkerchief maybe??

Nev is on the money. The water test is quick, simple and accurate.

This mob usually supply a measuring gauge to their outlets (at least down here anyways) which can quite accurately measure amount of gas left.

Of course you could go redneck, and just hook your BBQ up to the mains gas supply pipe, preventing any loss of supply ;)

All the best!

p.s. do not hook your BBQ up to the mains gas pipe. The Distributor will probably sue.
