The field of 16 women bowlers has been finalized for the United States Bowling Congress Women's Challenge, which will be taped in two days during National Bowling Week (Aug. 26-Sept. 1) at the Fashion Show Mall in Las Vegas.

"Killer B Promotions" is the owner and producer of the Women's Challenge, which is a made-for-TV event. Its unique format, which features an invitation-only field, will be contested on a specially-constructed lane and aired on ESPN2 over five consecutive Monday nights beginning Sept. 11.

Bowling stars and USBC spokespeople Diandra Asbaty, Carolyn Dorin-Ballard and Kim Terrell will headline the talented list of players for the unique competition.

The USBC became involved as a sponsor for the Women's Challenge because of the attention the television exposure will bring to women's bowling and the sport in general. This will be the first presence for women's bowling in the national spotlight since the Professional Women's Bowling Association ceased operations in 2003.

"This event will be a much-needed boost for women's bowling, and hopefully it will lead to future opportunities for all of the talented women bowlers looking for a stage to compete," USBC Chief Executive Officer Roger Dalkin said. "Ultimately, it could also be a vehicle to show the marketing potential of women's professional bowling."

The field also will include USBC Team USA members Lynda Barnes, Stefanie Nation, Shannon O'Keefe and Shannon Pluhowsky, former Team USA member Kassy Golden, former PWBA stars Leanne Barrette, Kendra Gaines, Cara Honeychurch, Liz Johnson and Cathy Dorin-Lizzi and international standouts Clara Guerrero, Robin Orlikowski and Sara Vargas.

"As in any invitational event, unfortunately there will be worthy participants excluded," Dalkin added. "Killer B Promotions used a criteria to select players based on bowling skill, diversity, marketability and to highlight compelling stories in hopes of putting together the most successful made-for-TV showcase of women's bowling possible."

In addition to the on-lane competition, ESPN2's cameras will follow the athletes through the mental and physical preparations required to be competitive at the highest level and onto the single-lane installation that will be specially constructed in the middle of the Fashion Show Mall. The lane will be installed by Kegel, the official lane maintenance provider for USBC tournaments, and will feature the company's new Edge lane surface.

The first four 90-minute telecasts will feature head-to-head competition with the winner from each show competing in the fifth telecast to determine the champion. Along with the unique single-lane venue, the event also will have a retro feel to it since the lane will not have the traditional mechanical pinsetter found in modern bowling centers. Instead, the pins will be set up manually to enhance the uniqueness of the competition.

"This event is much bigger than the 16 women involved," said Asbaty, the USBC Youth spokesperson. "It's for every little girl out there who wants to be a professional bowler and does not have that opportunity. If this event is successful, everyone wins. It is simply a way to get the ball rolling in hopes of creating a successful professional bowlers tour for women."

Good luck Cara
