Better to deal with facts than fantasy.
Phar Lap also won two Cox Plates, a Victoria Derby and an AJC Derby. He carried 62.5kgs when he won the 1930 Cup, after running a place in 1929 (as a three year old!) and raced with 68.0kgs in 1931 when the race was won by a horse carrying 43.5kgs! As previously stated he also won a race on all four days of the Melbourne cup carnival. Compare these weights with Makybe Diva’s three wins 51.5, 55.0 and 58.0 – no comparison! Plus the fact that Phar Lap won 37/51 and 14 in a row.
After proving himself the best in Australia, Phar Lap was invited to the Agua Caliente Handicap, a race to be held in Mexico. Phar Lap travelled by ship across the Pacific ocean, arriving in rainy San Francisco and then had a 400 mile trip in a horse van to Tijuana where the weather was very hot. And this for a horse that was facing winter back in his homeland.
Phar Lap had to carry 129 pounds, more than most of the other horses in the race, against some of the best horses in America who had come down to Mexico for a chance at the $50,000 purse, plus he was racing on dirt for the first time, not the nice, cushioned grass he had always raced on. On arrival he was starting to grow his winter coat, his body preparing for an Australian winter, not a Mexican spring. Then he suffered a painful injury to his heel, which usually means time off. Because of the hoof injury, Phar Lap had to wear heavy bar shoes for the first time in his life.
A lot to overcome to say the least! Phar Lap won easily by two lengths in the record time of 2:02 4/5, cutting 1/5 second from the previous track record.
Makybe Diva has a cushy plane flight to Japan and in two starts the best she can do is sixth.
One of Phar Lap's most amazing victories came in the 1931 VATC Futurity Stakes at Caulfield when second up after a spell over 1400 metres. With Jim Pike in the saddle, Phar Lap missed the start by the best part of twenty lengths. Although he carried more weight than all the best sprinter-milers of his day and was running on a heavy track, he made them look second rate as he got up to win by a neck. Many say it was by far the best victory of Phar Lap's career.
Makybe Diva is a great champion and no other horse has even won three Melbourne Cups and I was barracking like hell for her to win this year – but to say she was better than Phar Lap is getting a bit carried away. I think people forget what Phar Lap actually did and how no horse can get close to some of those achievements. Yes it is true the Diva had three starts for three Melb Cup wins but compare the weights with Phar Lap and even compare the weights of the other horses. If we could race them both over 3200 metres with 58.0kgs at Flemington (it would have to be a doctored track – otherwise Makybe Diva would not run) in a “dream race” the Diva would not get within 10 lengths of Phar Lap.
