(Brisbane, 18 July 2017): Strathpine Hyperbowl is buzzing in the lead up to hosting the Queensland Junior Cup, an exciting tenpin bowling tournament that has attracted a record number of players, officials and supporters travelling from almost every State and Territory in Australia.
The sport of tenpin bowling is increasingly popular with teenagers and younger players, and throughout the weekend of 22-23 July the bowling centre will showcase some of Australia’s best emerging talent, together with a squad of eight young players from the United States.
A unique appeal of the sport is the “fun “element, and adding to the excitement of pin-flying action players will compete for an outstanding array of prizes. Equal prize money and the thrilling bonus of return flights for two to Singapore, courtesy of SCOOT Airlines, is on offer for both the male and female champions, while Graded bowlers will also be rewarded with a significant prize pool.
The first squad will commence bowling 10 games of qualifying at 8.30am on Saturday morning and the second squad will hit the lanes at 1pm on Saturday afternoon, following the official Opening ceremony which will be attended by the Hon. Shane King MP, State Member for Kallangur, representatives of Moreton Bay Regional Council and other dignitaries. Squad C is scheduled to start at 5.45pm after which the top 12 male and top 8 female players will qualify for Sunday’s final matches.
Last year’s QJC champions were Matthew Clague from Queensland’s Gold Coast and Rebekah Commane from Point Cook in Victoria. Clague has now ‘aged out’ and is therefore unable to defend his title, but Commane returns this year along with fellow Victorian Daniel Perrella who was runner-up to Clague in 2016. 17 year-old Chloe Jones finished second last year in the female division, and rolled a perfect game during the tournament. Bowling from the age of 3, it was Jones’ first 300 game and the Townsville teenager will be striving for another perfect game and possibly the title this year.
The youngest competitor to nominate for the 2017 QJC is 11 year-old Blake Walsh from Ballina in northern NSW. Hailing from a famed bowling family, Blake won the Australian Junior Restricted Masters in 2015 at the age of 9. The youngster’s current League Average is 173, and he has an impressive High Game of 268, and a High 3-game Series of 695 to his credit.
