Ten young male and female bowlers have set their sights on selection for the team that will represent Australia at the II Commonwealth Youth Games to be held from 29 November to 4 December 2004.
The Training Squad was announced this afternoon by the CEO of Tenpin Bowling Australia, Alex Popov at the conclusion of a highly competitive weekend roll-off at Dragon City Lanes, the Centre that will act as host venue for the sport in December.
Billed as The Centrepiece of Victoria, the charming city of Bendigo - just two hours’ drive from Melbourne - was chosen by the Commonwealth Games Federation Association to host the second Commonwealth Youth Games after an enthusiastic bid by the Australian Commonwealth Games Association.
Eligibility is 18 years or less as at 31 December 2004 and Games organisers have placed a strict cap on participation levels in all sports following keen interest from 24 Commonwealth nations to contest the ten nominated sports at this landmark event.
The 20 young bowlers (listed below) qualified for the Squad after bowling a total of 18 games in Singles, Doubles and Teams events and, with the catchcry STRIKING FOR GOLD IN BENDIGO, have now taken their first step on the pathway to national representation.
“The composition of the squad means we will probably organise the Training Camp and final team selection here in Victoria” said Alex Popov from Dragon City Lanes this afternoon. “This weekend’s roll-off has been an excellent introduction to the format and lane conditions that the team will experience in December” he said. “As we’ve shown already twice this year at the 2004 Zone Youth and Asian Schools Championships, the calibre of our youth athletes is outstanding and this will be another excellent opportunity for our young bowlers to show their skill on the international stage”, he added.
