The continent-spanning city of Istanbul is described by Lonely Planet as Turkey’s ‘cultural heart and good-time capital’ and this week bowlers from all around the world have come to this bustling city to compete in the 4th Istanbul Bowling Open at the 20-lane Time Out Bowling Centre.
A ‘major’ on the 2007 European Bowling Tour, the Istanbul Bowling Open is a mixed singles tournament, with the female bowlers awarded a bonus of eight pins per game throughout the event.
Going into the last day of 6-game qualifying matches, Australia’s Andrew Frawley is presently in the lead after firing an impressive 1,441 series yesterday, while Jason Belmonte is currently in third place on 1,381, just 17 pins behind Germany’s Jens Nickel who Belmonte eliminated in the first round of last week’s WORLD TENPIN MASTERS in England.
19 year-old student, Emilie Alm from Trelleborg in Sweden who is competing for the first time in an EBT event is the top female scorer to date, and is in seventh place overall on 1,353, including her 48 pin bonus.
The tournament is organised by the Istanbul Bowling Sports Club and is open to both amateur and professional bowlers. The format allows multiple re-entries and the field will be cut to the top 42, with a further six places for positions 43-48 through a single game Desperado squad tonight, local time.
