Australia’s Jason Belmonte streaked to a runaway victory in the Boys Singles of the 12th Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championships this morning. Wearing Player Number 001, the exuberant 20 year-old from Orange, New South Wales won Gold in the first event of the Championships with a 2776 total and a 231.3 average over 12 games.

Today’s short oil pattern was a challenge for the squad, with Belmonte struggling mid-way through the block with 157 and 168 scores in Games 8 and 9. However, a strong finish by the overnight leader, with 266, 216 and 235 games, placed the Gold medal firmly in his grip.

Belmonte held off an equally strong finish by Japan’s Isao Yamamoto who rolled 234, 245 and then a 258 high game of the final round. Masters Gold medallist in last year’s Youth Championship, Yamamoto finished 45 pins off the pace to win the Silver, overtaking Korea’s Chung Seung Wan who finished on 2708 to take Bronze.

Technical Delegate, Donald Agent from Kegel, was happy with the outcome from a lane condition perspective. “What makes it good for us is that the top six bowlers are from six different countries – there’s no domination”

The Australian Girls were unable to maintain their strong position after Day 1, with Jayde Flanagan the highest placing in the Girls, finishing in 6th place.
