Australia started the first game against 2-time World Tenpin Team Cup champion Sweden with a strike from Jason Walsh, then the Aussies converted three spares before 19-year old anchor man Jason Belmonte threw his first strike. Sweden fell behind early as Göran Carlsson missed a 10-pin spare in the first frame. After a spare in the second frame the Swedes reeled off three consecutive strikes for a 12-pin lead after five frames. The match was nearly even after Mac Stewart and Paul Trotter doubled in the seventh and eighth frame. Sweden countered as Larsen, Ahlen and Backe struck out for 236. Belmonte performed well in the tenth frame and fired three strikes for 212.

Sweden, the reigning World Champion in five-player teams, started the second game with spare-xx-spare-xx and widened the lead as the team from down-under opened twice in the first and fourth frame. The Scandinavians sealed the win with three spares and one strike. Australia struck from frame 7 through 10, but came up short, losing 439-423.
