While not having actually bowled at one, I have gone in and had a look at the Strike on Wintergarden in Brisbane City. It is more like a nightclub and include some pretty jazzy things there. Orange pins, large plasma screens for each lane and novelty bowling balls are just some of the things they have there. They can also put walls or draw some thing out to close off a certain number of lanes so you can have a private party or function.
Definitely a place to go when you want to bowl socially with friends. I believe that the cost varies depending on the time you want to go in. It is a nice place though, I am going to look at bowling with a group of friends there one day and enjoy it (rather than worry about technique, hitting boards and the like ).
Looks a lot like what they have done with Retro Manhattan Superbowl in Macott, Sydney. they have the same sort of set up there, even to the point of having poker machines in the centre.
I actually went and bowled at Bayside Strike in Victoria. Lanes are shorter than the norm, there was about 5 breakdowns in one game and wouldn't suggest using your own equipment as the machinery took a few chunks out of the house balls.
But saying that, it is a great place for a fun night out, even if you don't go on the lanes.
Strike centres are there so you can drink and bowl and have fun. They are 100% social centres. Good for a laugh and a fun night out.
Becca: Bayside just looks shorter. It is also the only Strike centre where they put in second hand GS-98 machines. They'll never do that again. All the other centres are GS-X machines that will run and run and run.
Have bowled at Strike City QV Cnr Lonsdale and Swanston Street in Melbourne.
Note you can't use your own equipment or shoes as their insurance would not cover it so don't bother bringing them.
Bowled with work mates from Big W QV where I work part time. Never good bowling in house shoes or with a house ball (even worse for me a left hander).
Funny handing your shoes over to the counter and even funnier trying to bowl in the velcro fastend house shoes when you normally bowl in dexter VI's.
Setups are good and found conditions on lanes fair. Not that I couldn't do much with the ill fitting balls (all right handed).
Hate to admit it but was beaten by one of my work mates who could be a decent bowler if he chose to take it up. Not that I was trying that hard just mainly trying to protect my bowling hand and avoid landing on my ass at the foul line.
