In your opinion who is better. I know different decades, but it's a hard one. Mine is Wally, A he is a Queenslander, B what a player who demanded respect every time he walked out. That State of Origin when he went toe to toe with Mark Gyer, was a great moment in origin history.

Wally Lewis..............Lewis is the greatest league player that I have ever seen...........Johns is the second best.

I have every single state of orgin game on VHS you can just see his determination and will to win a game, he could turn a game in a blink of an eye.

Lewis was a master at every skill in the game and he was a tough, he could hit like a MACK truck.

Mate I am a queenslander, and deadset, wally has nothing on joey, try comparing langer with johns, they play the same position, so it will be a more valid argument, there are several different playing roles between five eighth and halfback

by some, Joey is regarded the Best Player to ever play the game, there are others that imo contend that title, fittler is one, wally is no where near the mark imo, id rate lockyer behind fittler, than possibly lewis.

I vote Joey, since he has made a bigger mark on the game than wally, wally was really only a state of origin legend, didnt really rock me in general.

Fittler V Lockyer
Joey V Langer

Both Equal Very Valid Arguments.

even Stuart V Toovey, both 2nd to the halfbacks above, is a valid argument

one class of football isnt enough for me, he is far from been called the greatest in first class football or International Football, Origin may be a Valid Argument.

But Johns has ruled all 3 classes of football, and really a very little few players contends this argument

to have a very good judgement on comparing two players, in my opinion you need to have seen them play against each other on occasions, now wally retired from the gold coast in 91 or 2, joey debut with newcastle in 94

In todays game there is absolutely no difference betweeb 5/8 and halfback...........in fact there isn't much difference between any of the positions.

You don't think Wally ruled international or club games?

You couldn't be further from the truth..........he was a member of the 82 invincibles and captained the undefeated 86 roo tour.
He captained and played more international games than Johns, he captained and played more state games than Johns, he won more man of the match awards than Johns.
He played more club games than Johns

Wally also toured with the undeafeated Australian schoolboys Rugby union team of 1977.

Club games...........1978 to 1992...........308

State games ...........42

International games..........55

Total...........405

You rate Lockeyer ahead of Lewis.............Lockeyer misses more tackles in one season than Lewis missed in his entire career.............Lewis doesn't throw hospital passes like Lockeyer either.

Shawn

Comparing the 2 is pointless as they played in different eras. However, the difference in the 2 is that Johns could kick goals. Both were the best players of their respective times.

I voted for Wally.

for starters, wally's career wasnt full of injuries, joey was out for 2 possibly 3 full seasons + all the short stints on the sidelines, of course wally has more games under his belt.

how many rep games have joey missed, when he was available ???, maybe one or two in his debut year

so its certain, he would of been picked for every rep game if he was fit.

Wally= Great Player, but really there wasnt much competition in the ranks back then, especially at five eighth.

Imo only Terry Lamb was the only other five eighth in that era, that even came close to his capabilities, of course he would make invincibles.

Joey especially in his younger years had how many halves at par with him, stuart, langer, toovey, stacey jones, robbie paul (saw him in a few tests, where he completely outplayed joey).

Stormxxx....Date of Birth: July 12, 1987

Mate, quite simply.....you were still in Nappies when "THE KING" was running around the paddock!!! hahaha

Wally had a run of broken arms, like I said, he was tough............he played on as captain during a test against the kiwi's with a broken arm. A broken arm kept Wally out of the 1990 Roo tour and he was still the incumbent captain.

Wasn't much competition? Who's that fella in an arm wrestle with wally on state of orgin shield? Brett Kenny maybe........... he was a sensational player.

According to you, the selectors of the day got that one wrong, they should have picked Terry Lamb over Kenny?
Cliff Lyons was another very good 5/8 who played both state and national games, how about Olsen Filipano .......to say Wally had no competition in a career spanning 14 years indicates that your knowledge of the history in Wally's era is vague to say the least!

No one ever completely outplayed Wally............he was just too good..........

STORMXXX YOUR NO QUEENSLANDER SO DON'T PRETEND TO BE ONE!!!!!!!!

I agree with peterb, different era's of the game,if anything the game was alot tougher than it is now with the stricter rules enforced on safety,so no excuse on who missed more games with injuries.Players played on games with injuries back then because they didn't have doctors/trainers pulling them off the field now that's passion(or stupidity).Wally will always be the king of his era no doubt, now joey will be the king of his era(rightfully so)but i bleed maroon so wally's the man.Now the big question which player will rein the new era, any sugestions?????? Darren Lockyer??

Lewis is just ahead of Johns because he owned State of Origin. No doubt Johns is the only player that has reached the same level and greatness as Wally, but Wally Lewis is and will forever be "THE KING".

WHAT ABOUT LANGER ??????????????

Langer was also very good, he only had one failing.........he was a terrible tackler.

You can't blame his size because there was quite a few small men who tackled way above their weight...........Geoff Toovey comes to mind instantly as does Johns who could pick up and drive a big man backwards.

Lockeyer also falls into the can't tackle catergory.........I've never rated Lockeyer very good, there are at least 1/2 a dozen 5/8 in the last 25 years who I would rate better than Lockeyer.............for me Lockeyer is one of the most over rated players I have ever seen.

We all see things differently...............

Maybe but Lockyer is by far the best fullback thats ever played. Moving him to five-eighth was the biggest mistake Bennett has made. Not as good as Johns, Langer or Lewis, but still a great player.

I disagree, there are a lot of contenders for the best fullback that ever played...............Lockeyer is a good attacker in this position but I would nominate someone who could tackle as well.
Being the last line of defense the fullback often finds himself in a one on one situation with an attacker in full flight, he needs to be an effective defender not a speed bump like Lockeyer.

Lewis for sure over johns and sonny bill williams for international man of the year everyone remember the start of the year and that hit on johns OH MY GOD my only regret in life is i dont have that on tape to watch everyday . In short lewis is the king and johns well shouldn t have got out of the hospital bed just wheeled to the nursing home
