Aussies Sam Stosur and Jason Belmonte join a star-studded line up including LeBron James, Novak Djokovic, Maria Sharapova, Aaron Rodgers and Rory McIlroy as nominees for the 2012 Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards (ESPYS). Voting is open now for the Awards that will be held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on July 11 and televised LIVE in Australia on Thursday, 12 July from 9am.
Now celebrating 20 years, the ESPY Awards remains one of the most glamorous events on the yearly sports calendar. ESPN’s awards ceremony is always a heady mix of athletic greatness and Hollywood-style glitz, with the awards celebrating the most outstanding athletes and unforgettable sports achievements from the previous year. The ESPY Awards pay tribute to the best sports performances, both individual and team, as well as recognizing those peak athletic moments that will go down in history.
As in past years, the ESPY’S allows sports fans worldwide to join in an online vote for the winners in more than 30 categories including Best Male Athlete, Best Female Athlete, Best Coach/Manager, and Team of the Year.
The 2012 ESPYS will be hosted by actor/comedian Rob Riggle, widely known for his work as a correspondent on the The Daily Show and from his memorable roles in films such as The Hangover, Step Brothers, and The Other Guys. Most recently, Riggle appeared in box office hit films Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax and the action-comedy 21 Jump Street.
Australia’s highest ranked female tennis player Sam Stosur has been nominated in the category of Best Female Tennis Player. Stosur faces tough competition from fellow nominees including 2012 French Open winner Maria Sharapova who became only the 10th woman in history to complete a career Grand Slam, 2012 Australian Open winner Victoria Azarenka and left handed Czech Petra Kvitova who dominated the grass courts to take the 2011 Wimbledon title.
Previous winners of Best Female Tennis Player include Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Venus Williams, Steffi Graff and Monica Seles
